Force 120 or 125?

I've purchased 2 force 120hp motors (i think). They were cheap with good compression. They allegedly run but one developed a miss and the previous owners mechanic told him that forces weren't worth investing any money into. So long story short, he re-powered and i bought the motors for a few hundred a piece.

now the cowel graphics show force “120” so i figured that meant it was from the 90s at least. Wanted to confirm with serial numbers before looking into parts and thats where i got confused. A “foundry” stamp on the lower cowel shows “89”. “Foundry” stamp on air intake below lower carb shows “87”. An obviously aftermarket ignition pack shows compatibility with year 88-91 force120/125 motors. Mid section has been repainted and i dont see any serial number on it. So yea, im not sure.

Can anyone tell me anything with these pictures?

The Black/blue motors started in 1987
The 125 was made until 1989 then changed to 120.
No difference just a different rating. One measured at the prop the other at the block(I think).
The Ignition packs are Blue they are OEM until 1990 then they came out with Black packs/coils.
The black coils had different connectors so they couldn't be used with the blue packs. I understood they were different but would work if the connectors were removed and wired direct.
The year can be found under the pack/coil on the block, there's a foundry stamp under there.
Good luck, I've always been a fan of Force motors and have owned a bunch of them.
Unfortunately they didn't hold up when used in salt water.
They ran great just the transom bracket and T@T didn't like the salt.

Just want to correct jerry at the spec. of the engines.
The 125Hp had 3,312 in bore, the 120Hp had 3.375 in bore.
Except for the 1990 120Hp A model which had 3.312 in bore.
The stroke was the same of both.

Do you have the lower-units for them? if so they will be a one piece shaft & single exhaust meaning no through prop exhaust (if original)
