Might have been a little overkill but I wanted something that would last. Every piece of wood that was put into boat was 100% wrapped in fiberglass before Install. Then tabbed, glassed or whatever was needed

when you go to pull the motor out. pull the carb apart and clean with a can of carb cleaner. then re-assemble. that way a year from now you are not fighting with fuel residue gummed up in the carb

As to be expected there was complete rot. The wood was not laminated together anymore and also not stuck to the fiberglass. What's there is about 3 inch thick. Is that the normal thickness I should have when I redo it

transom should be 2.00-2.25" thick
outer fiberglass (about 1/4-3/8" thick)
1-1/2" of wood
inner fiberglass

That stinks. What kind of boat are you working on?

I have found a soft spot in the fiberglass on my floor. I have cut the fiberglass back and found rotten plywood. The foam is dry right to the bottom and zero damage to the stringer. Now is that foam supposed to be really light kinda deal as it is
Pray what you see is mildew or mold. I can't count the numbers of times in my boats that foam has soaked up water. Drill into stringer and examine drillings for black rot or water. If any, you probably are going to spend a lot of time grinding and re glassing. If not, plug holes with 5200 and thank God, you caught it in time.

I didn't think it would make a difference beings it all had to go so the end result would be the same

Nothing cooler than a boat with a mahogany transom with 8 or 9 coats of spar varnish. It's the classic look. Not everybody has that opportunity.

Most go from the inside so there is no exterior fiberglass work like fairing and gel coat.you certainly can go from outside in, can paint the outside with automotive type finishes .

Pay attention to transom thickness spec Scott gave you can glass the new transom from both sides to prevent rot. My buddies glastron has exposed plywood at top, real shoddy as far as keeping it from rotting
