KeltonKrew, you may want to check airport delays before you leave. Jackson should be on the dry side of it but you never know.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Tropical Storm Bonnie weakened slightly late Tuesday but its steady progress northward in the Gulf of Mexico prompted a broad swath of northwestern Florida to be placed under a severe weather watch. A hurricane, named Charley, could follow in days.

The watch issued by the National Hurricane Center indicated the storm could be felt in the region by Wednesday evening, as Bonnie pushes toward the Florida Panhandle.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Charley neared hurricane strength as it pushed across the Caribbean on a course that could put it off Florida's west coast by Friday, forecasters said.

At 11 p.m. EST, Bonnie was moving north at 5 mph, just under 300 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Bonnie's sustained winds slowed during the evening from near 50 mph to near 45 mph. Most forecasting models keep the storm below hurricane strength before landfall, which would again weaken it. Tropical storm force winds extended 30 miles from the center.

Charley, meanwhile, was speeding across the central Caribbean toward Jamaica and was expected to begin a curving shift to the north Wednesday or Thursday, forecasters said. The storm potentially could arrive off west-central Florida late Friday.

At 11 p.m. EDT, Charley was about 300 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, moving west-northwest near 25 mph. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch were declared in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, and a tropical storm warning was declared in Haiti's southwest peninsula. The storm's center could approach Jamaica by Wednesday morning.

Charley had maximum sustained winds near 73 mph. The winds were expected to strengthen over the next day.

Looks like Bonnie will pass just east of here. The worste part of these storms is always on the east side of them, so we should get a welcome bit of rain and that's about it. Erin was fun back in '95. I stood outside and watched most of that one. Trees going down all aound, what a rush!!

We are hoping in Orlando we only get some rain and light winds. Parents moved to Orlando in 1961, the year after Donna. I have been in some mild hurricanes and strong tropical storms over the past 43 years. I know central Florida is due for a bad one. We are praying it just doesn’t happen anytime soon!!!!

Man, don't like the extended track - was planning on camping out this weekend - looks like one will hit us (central PA) on Friday evening into Saturday and the other Saturday evening into Monday. Yuk! Forget the campsite this weekend!

Thanks for the heads up LF, I think!

Aspeck, you don't like this? I live just about dead-center of Charlie's projected landfall, only 12 miles inland.
I have about thirty boats to move before I can even think about moving my own. I doubt I'll make it. But then, my two boats are well-inland, whereas the thirty plus are in boat slips on the bay.
It's strange, but the sun is shining, and the breeze is under 5MPH right now. It's easy to see how even us Florida crackers can be lulled-into a false sense of security about these things.

12Footer. Wish I was closer to you so I could come and help you get them moved!

My apologies to all in Florida - I was just so looking forward to the weekend of camping that I forgot to see the gravity of the situation for my friends in the direct path!

My prayers are with all of you!

Jeb Bush has already called for a State of Emergency with the anticipation of flooding. Hopefully the storms will move on through quickly.

Re: Florida is in for some wet weather

as of 5:00 Pm EST.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 105 MPH...165 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. THIS MAKES CHARLEY A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE
SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS
FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS AND CHARLEY COULD BECOME A MAJOR
HURRICANE LATER TONIGHT OR FRIDAY.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 30 MILES... 45 KM...
FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP
TO 125 MILES...205 KM.

THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 980 MB...28.94 INCHES.

STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 10 TO 14 FEET CAN BE EXPECTED ALONG THE
SOUTH COAST OF CUBA NEAR AND EAST OF WHERE THE CENTER MAKES
LANDFALL. IN ADDITION...STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 2 TO 4 FEET...ALONG
WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING WAVES...CAN BE EXPECTED IN THE
FLORIDA KEYS. STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 10 TO 13 FEET IS ALSO
POSSIBLE NEAR AND SOUTH OF THE WHERE THE CENTER CROSSES THE FLORIDA
WEST COAST.

RAINFALL TOTALS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES ARE LIKELY IN ASSOCIATION WITH
CHARLEY. THESE RAINS COULD CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODS.

They predict land fall by 8:00 PM Friday night, I will say a prayer for y'all in its path.

Re: Florida is in for some wet weather

Well, the werk is done. Nothin to do but wait for the ride.
I'm breathing a little easier than I was this morning, because it's path has been to the extreme westward of the projected path so far. I'm well inland, and so my prayers are with those who live in the community I werk at (Bonita Bay, a community on the bay itself).
One of my daughters and her hubby live on Ft Myers Beach, so they may be evacuating to my house around noon tommorrow.

Re: Florida is in for some wet weather

Update...

Charley is on the way to the Tampa bay area. As of 7:00pm, 80,000 people are under mandatory evacuation in the upper bay area, over 100,000 people mandatory evacuation in the souther bay area. Roads are jammed and they've even lifted all the tolls off of the toll roads.

Expecting landfall around 2:00pm tomorrow. Luckily it will strike with an outgoing tide so the storm surge wont likely be so bad.

I made the mistake of walking in Walmart today...
Shelves are bare, people buying stuff like they will be without food, water or clothing for over a month. I can see some basic supplies, but people are buying junk. for instance, the cookie isle was barren. since when do you need cookies to survive a storm. Oh well, at least they can sit on the couch eating cookies staring at a blank TV screen :)

More as I hear more...
Nav

Re: Florida is in for some wet weather

Just got off the phone with the M.I.L. in St. Pete Beach. She's not leaving, unless they 'escort' her out. She's battened down the hatches and is steaming headlong into the fray! I wished her Godspeed and told her she could always pack the car & head to Ohio. "No dice" she said. I fear she's got more guts than brains...
Re: Florida is in for some wet weather

It hasn't even crossed Cuba yet. Those are some awful brave meteorologists to guess it will go in within 100 miles of Tampa Bay at around 2:00 tomorrow. Sometimes they sit in the Gulf and just sort of lurk. I guess they have to make predictions, and give people a chance to board up and all, but I wouldn't be worrying yet.

I lived in Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg for about twenty years, between the three. Hurricanes are nothing to laugh at, and should be respected, but the fact that one may hit in a certain place is really hard to judge.

We have family who just moved to North Port a week ago with no real clue about hurricane force and destruction. I hope they head the warnings.

Re: Florida is in for some wet weather

Just saw the morning paper...

Mandatory Evacuations just broke the 800,000 mark. All barrier islands are shut down, police allowing traffic off only. Now they're saying between 9-13 ft storm surge. That should flood about half the county. But as I sit here and look outside, all is calm and sunny. go figure.

Anyways, now they're saying it should make landfall sometime between 6-7pm. This will be interesting, hurricane winds and rain while its dark outside. Well, at least people wont realize that their power is out.

We're ready. I pulled the one boat out of the lake and parked it up near the house in a protected area. My "Tinny", I simply pulled the plug and sank her to the bottom. (took the engine off of course :) ) Lets just hope this storm decides to turn west and stay in the gulf.

Nav
