New Mexico is now getting some flood victims.
There are supposed to be 6000 coming here.
I really believe Gov. Richardson is doing this so he can be President. He's gonna spend a whole 750,000 dollars on this.

I want to know what your towns doing.

Those "people" are probably not the kinds of persons you really want in your neighborhood. They did not head the evacuation notices and got trapped by the flood. What are they going to do now? They don't have a job or a place to stay of their own. I hate to say this but those are not the kinds of conditions that make good citizens.
Basically how are they going to live? My guess is that they will probably be a lot more panhandlers and crime than there was before due to bordom and want of something to do.

I am sure there are some good people but-
I will be cleaning my guns and locking my doors.

Like I said on another post... Go ahead and bring the crime up here... and I'll show you why we have concealed weapons permits...!

I have no idea what they'll do with the criminal elements. I still say send them to Mexico. They will fit right in with the crime and no laws. They'd be right at home.

I personally haven't seen any 'refugees' as of yet, but I hear they were shipping some North of me to Portland (which is just find with me as it's full of tree-hugging Liberals :) ) Maybe they can let the 'criminal element' share their condos?

H.

Yes and No....

First, let me explain why I say no...
This has been, and by all accounts will continue to be; a very busy hurricane season... We still have 3 full months left where we are vulnerable (september, october, and november) with more storms expected...

Would'nt that be a kick in the butt if we had to evacuate these evacuees(sp?)......... Not only moving these people, but have'nt they already been through enough?.. Common sense tells me that bringing evacuees to south Florida, or any area that could possibly be in a huricanes path is a bad idea.... But they are here..

Otherwise, I say Welcome...

Many Kudos to those who've put these folks up... :)

Not welcome in this town, but no one here will admit it. Some of the people here are borderline racists. Not based in true hatred, but out of ignorance and stereotypes. Many have never even talked with a minority/person of color/black/african-American, etc.
This is a very white community and a few jerks would like to keep it that way.
My cousin adopted a young black boy a few years ago. I think he is one of three in the school system.

I grew up in Milwaukee, so have a different outlook from the locals.

Of course their welcome. Bring them to Birmingham. Disburse them across the South, they'll fit right in. Atlanta, Savannah, Tallahasee, Memphis, etc. No one will notice their coming. :)

Dave..

Ya, well, thats not what they are mostly. They will get out of whatever transportation with there hands out and wont leave untill they are denied any more. They mostly were not working when the Huricane hit, what makes you think they want to work now? Not all of them mind ya, only about 99.9% thats all.

Yeah, let 'em come. The cops around here need something better to do than harrassing people driving at reasonable speeds.

Pointer, Geez yous got "The People's Socialist Republic of Madison" figured out. In the early 80's the buses came up from the Windy City and we've never been the same. Now they want to give the illegals all low interest home loans and mandate 7 sick days for any worker at any size business. I grew up there but now live just to the nort for the past 25 years. It's bad enough dealing everyday with the child molesters teachers at the UW. Yous betta hope a disaster never hits Beloit, they be swimming upstream. Right now the flight from the city is taking place to the burbs. And to everybody else: You can't smoke in the bars anymore.

Caught some white trash looters at Homo Depot last week while making a delievry last week at 7 PM. They had 5 grand of tools they were passing thru the fence. The refugees will fit right in, 8 months out of the year you don't have to worry about keeping your beer cold.

Don't get me wrong, I welcome anyone that comes here and can contribute and not be a leach for life. We have too good of benifits for too long. Remember weez a blue state, it's from being sucked dry.

Re: Flood people are they welcome to your town?

Any decent person who wants to come to my place, from NO that could prove to me that they HAD a f/t job(prior to the hurricane), etc... would be welcome at my house.

My door is always open to anyone who NEEDS it.

All others(who I will not refer to by name-calling) are NOT welcome in my house.

And Homerr....the state you live in scares the heck out of me. I will not get into an arguement about this topic, but, in my opinion, there is no need to carry a concealed weapon, unless you are a cop/FBI/CIA etc...

Peoria is all set to house people in our Civic Center (hockey arena and big expo hall), we're just waiting to hear whether they are coming or not. The city will get 2 hours notice of their arrival! They must be flying them in on the SSt!

TilliamWe,

Caterpillar should recieve some handsome contracts in the aftermath of the hurricane. Good luck and thank you. Your ability to deliver the equipment to repair and rebuild will be critical....

WB59,

I have a brother in Madison proper and another brother who just moved to Blue Mounds just west of town. Was offered badger tickets this past weekend, but found out to late to take advantage of them. I appreciate your invitation, and I probably be on Mendota next weekend trying to make the most of what is left of the boating season.

As sad as the political and educational environment is in Madison, it is a beautiful city and fun to visit.

Re: Flood people are they welcome to your town?

Not all the evacuees were on welfare guys.
Most were gainfully employed.
Remember, over a million people got out before the storm, and fled to the neighboring states. With nothing to go back to, many of these people are also looking for a new place to live and work.

I hope Wisconsin does step up and welcome some up here. Figure they will plant them in the big cities though, where the social services are more abundant.

I hope they like winter though. We will be having frost in a month.

I heard that Cabela's in Lehi, Utah (just opened) was going to take 300 and put them to work. That's pretty cool for a business that just opened.

Re: Flood people are they welcome to your town?

I heard a lot refused to go to Utah - I was surprised.

We have 2,500 on Cape Cod (MA). New Hampshire just asked for 500. I know CT took some. Not sure about the rest of New England (Maine, Vermont, and Rhode Island)

Winters are tough here in the land of the prefect storm (heck its 52F right now) so we are going to have to provision them accordingly... It may be a shock to some used to a warm climate but it's better than nothing...
