Float adjustment

Have a 1955 Evinrude Fastwin 15 hp and I believe the float is out of adjustment. Last time on the water it ran fine. Except it was leaking gas out of the throat of the carb. when engine was tilted up. Also seemed to flood itself after the engine was turned off. Brought it home and checked the carb. float. Made a quick adjustment and it stopped the gas from coming out the carb. throat. Took it out for a second trial run and it seem to start up much better. But at high speed we would hear a clunk and the outboard itself would seem to jump a bit. Almost like the feeling when you hit a log in the water. It repeated this same clunking sound so we decided to use the trolling motor and call it a day. Since the only thing we touched was the float we figured there must be a specific float adjustment for this outboad. Any help you could give me would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rich

Re: Float adjustment

The clunking you describe has nothing to do with the carb. The clunking is the sound you hear when the gears in the lower unit separate and then re-engage. This is caused from a worn forward gear and Dog gear. Another cause for the gears to separate is a mis-adjusted gear shift rod and linkage. More than likely it's the worn gear surfaces. Shifting the motor too slowly can prematurely wear the gear surfaces. Once worn, the only best solution is replacement of the dog gear and forward gear.
Shifting of the gears should be done smartly (at low RPM's) to lessen the wear of the gear surfaces.

Re: Float adjustment

That makes sense because we recently removed the lower unit to replace the impeller. Will check the linkage to see if there has been any slippage. Question: is there a float adjustment for this outboard?

Re: Float adjustment

The only float adjustment is by bending the tab on the float when you have the carb apart. When you hold the assembly upside down, the float should rest perfectly level.
