Re: Flare storage,

I can't visualize how the rod holders would hold the other equipment. Nets, gaffs, boat hooks, handled brushes, sure, but a fire extinguisher and flares? How?

Re: Flare storage,

Ok, that makes a bit more sense. :) You could do that, but I keep my flares in one of these: http://www.iboats.com/Dry-Box/dm/*******.649806399--**********.738991673--view_id.484669

It keeps them dry, and in an "emergency emergency" (read as capsizing), the box will float. I hope that I, and everyone else on this board never finds out if my thinking is correct.

I also question whether or not the rod holder setup would actually hold the flares in place during normal boating activities.

Re: Flare storage,

I assume the locking end would keep the flares in place.. I wish I could find some type of rack that I have in my ski locker where the nav lights are stored but bass pro doesnt seem to carry them and I have some bass pro gift cert i need to burn off :p

Making the holders from PVC pipe might be alot cheaper. Just a thought.

Re: Flare storage,

Not sure its a requirement but you should be storing your flares in a waterproof container of some sort. If something happens and they get wet, they won't work.

A good thought it is!...A pipe with a cap on one end and threaded plug on the other. I'm going to use this in different situation I was pondering. We used to mount buss bars and other electrical connections in tupperware.

I've done that, too. There's all kinds of stuff out there you can substitute if you use some imagination. Being a cheapskate (which I am) can help get the creative juices flowing... :)

Thinking of a way we can innerline a 2 to 4" pvc pipe with a felt like substance. Any suggestions?

How about this- cut a piece of felt to fit the inside of the pipe, but make it longer than the pipe. Spray the inside of the pipe with 3M upholstery/carpet adhesive, or brush it with contact cement or something. Roll up the felt and feed it into the pipe. Let it stick out past the ends of the pipe.

Take another piece of pipe (wooden dowel?) with a smaller diameter than the first, but longer than the felt, and use that to roll the felt smooth inside the first pipe (like a rolling pin). Probably need to work the ends of the felt to smooth out the wrinkles. You can trim the excess at the ends of the pipe when you're done.

Understand, I've never actually done this, but it seems workable. Might get difficult if the pipe is very long.

If I have a brainstorm I'll let you know.

Whatcha building- a 'comfortable' pipe bomb? :D

Re: Flare storage,

By the way, does anyone know the right way to actually USE a hand-held flare? You do NOT want to hold it, and you don't want it inside your boat. The 'slag' that drips off it is (among other things) burning magnesium- it'll seriously burn you and could set fire to your boat.

Have a roll of duct tape aboard. Tape the flare to a boat hook or oar, and hold it outide the boat, at an angle so it can't drip inside or on your body. A friend of ours fabricated a piece of pipe that the flare fits into..

My wife and I each set off an expired flare a few weeks ago to see what it was like. The slag made burn marks in our concrete driveway.

Re: Flare storage,

I'm with the guy that suggested the dry box. I don't know how anybody gets along without one of those on board. I keep my flares, a couple of light sticks a hand held GPS and a whistle along with the registration in mine at all times. Then when I get on board I put my wallet, cell phone and camera in. I then offer to store any valuables anybody else might want to keep dry. The box floats and can be submerged without leaking. Oh and being a smoker I keep a spare lighter and a pack of smokes in there too.

Sure your idea will work. Will give it a try. Thanks. Maybe for a pipe but not a bomb;)

Re: Flare storage,

I don't know about the idea about putting the flares in PVC pipe. It will still sink and to keep it water proof you will need to have an o-ring to seal it. Also it might be harder to open in case of an emergency, you might have to put rubber compound or rubber bands around the handle so you can easily take top off. Then paint it distress orange so you can more easily find it. After that it is all said and done, didn't you put more money and time into making these than purchasing a cheap water proof box or a Tupperware container?

I keep mine in the waterproof box and have everything in individual zip-block bags.

Do you realize that you can buy the waterproof canister already for you?

Put your stuff inside a tube sock. Then slide it all into the pipe.
If the pipe is mounted to a wall or something, you can easily remove everything from it instantly.

Ammo boxes are also good for dry storage of such items as flares.

Don't make a storage tube out of pvc pipe with a screw in plug. In order to be water tight, you will need two big wrenches to open it.

Some of us use welding rod storage containers for our flares. These are popular:
