Re: Fishing Techniques

sorry about the skunken ya took there beachbabe. i would have put up a reply but i don't know your area at all. with 20mph winds getten the boat to stay still must have been tough enough. what is a sand trout? is it like the spotted trout or the sugger trout( some call the latter butter trout)? i use shrimp, mudminnows and pinfish. sometimes a small crab for reds. how i rig depends on the conditions and my target fish and what i'm fishing from.(bridge, boat, shore, wadeing and is there a current.) water temp. is a big thing to as well as bottom structure.(are the fish feeding slow, will my bait hide in the grass if i'm close to the bottom, how much water do i want to cover and how fast do i want to cover it?) give me some details and i,ll share some FL. gung fu. same gulf, differant waters.
derwood

Re: Fishing Techniques

Hi Beachbabe,
Sorry to hear things didn't turn out as planned. I guess it goes to show that there has to be some trips that don't hit it off as well as others eh!
Galveston Bay sound like a huge place. I don't even know where it is but have seen parts on TV. These oyster beds you mention in the first post, do they normally give up a feed? They sound like the optimum spot to fish. The Drum you mention also sound similar to our snapper (I looked them up). How are they smoked?
Good luck with the next trip.
Ross

Re: Fishing Techniques

Hi Beachbabe

Sorry we couldn't help, but that wasn't a dumb question - it certainly had me stumped...

Derwood and Crab Bait are our resident experts on live baiting and associated gung fu. I've never tried any of that stuff myself. I'd be interested in seeing a full answer to your question about how to rig it etc.

I like drift fishing, especially when you don't know the precise spot of the fish. You get to move over a wider area and hopefully catch the sweet spot on your travels. It also suits my lazy disposition with the anchor rope...

Better luck next time,
62 ;)

Re: Fishing Techniques

62_Kiwi, are you out there?
I've just bought the latest "New Zealand Fishing World" magazine. It's Issue 7 2002 - May/June edition.
Theres an article about fishing from the ramps around Maraetai including GPS positions. There's even one or two of my spots there. No I didn't have anything to do with them being printed.
I've added them to my GPS and intend to check them out next time I'm out that way. With winter coming on I think that'll be rather soon.
I was going out with my wife tomorrow but the Coastguard just issued a wind warning so I'll go shopping instead. She can't believe how many times she's been shopping this year. Her grin just keeps getting bigger!
Ross

Re: Fishing Techniques

Hi Ross

Yes, I'm still floating around out here in the ether. It's a strange time of year - Autumn - and I've been doing strange things, like shopping with my wife (you too - yee gods!), cleaning up the garden, planting trees, washing things and other wierd & unnatural stuff. :(

Like you, at least I'll have plenty of "brownie points" saved up for future fishing trips. ;)

Yes, the weather's getting colder and windier... but more importantly the boat withdrawl symptoms are starting to set in. I have to get back out on the water soon or I'm going to lose the plot altogether...

Thanks for the tip on NZ Fishing World, I must get that issue. There's also one that comes out each year which lists every documented fishing spot in NZ - it's a big one! I've got last year's edition... I doubt that it changes much from year to year.

What type of GPS are you running?

I forget the brand name of mine, but it's got a nasty habbit of losing contact with the satellites a bit too often for comfort. How well does yours work?

Re: Fishing Techniques

Further to the GPS discussion, here's a picture I found of mine;

GPS.JPG

I must have got a shock to see it working, so took a photograph! It's got charts loaded too which are moderately useful.

If any of my redneck buddies see this... Check out these coordinates for my "Man o' the South" street cred! :D

Re: Fishing Techniques

Thanks for the look see at your GPS. I run a Garmin II which is ild but very reliabliable, plus with the external aerial is very accurate since Uncle Bill Clinton took the error's away!
I have just returned from shopping in Hamilton. No undies or anything like that but my mate took me into a second hand store and I started buying. She was rapt as well. We bought a 2m Composite 8kg rod with a Shamino Baitcaster (you know the ones, they have two clutches) all for $70:00. And it was in tip top condition. I was so happy with that my wife splashed out $300:00 on a guitar for our daughter. Go figure, and I thought I was the clever ****.
Never mind, I also bought a spare prop for my Johnson for $35:00.
Happy fishing sport and I hope to see you out there someday soon.
Ross

Re: Fishing Techniques

RossJ, well done - you set an inspirational example. Given the slightest break in the weather and you're out there catching a pile of fish... and you keep doin' it.

I need to take a leaf out of your book and get back out on the water, before I completely turn into an "unfisherperson"...

Surfcasting - now that's my favourite kind of outdoor action.

BTW, how did the boat show go ?

Re: Fishing Techniques

This is how it works, it was either the boat show or a trip to the mighty Kaipara Harbour. It was an easy choise really, so I don't have any feedback on the boatshow at all.
I can however tell anybody who cares to know that a good 4x4 was a prerequisite to get into the farm past the calf-deep cow **** followed by the soft terrain then the final hill climb to our camp! It was sheer fun to be there again. Nobody for miles.
Ross
