Re: Fishing Techniques

Derwood & Crab Bait - thanks for the gung fu guys. I've just been making up some rigs (guess I'm a redneck at heart too) and your descriptions have been very helpful. I only jabbed myself a few times - not too much blood on the floor. You guys should have your own tv show - look out Fish Fishburn!

Derwood - I was going to ask the meaning of shoaFIN or shoaFIN preist, but I suspect that question cannot be answered with mere words alone.

What do you use for live bait? Does it swim around on the line? What sort of fish do you catch like that?

Re: Fishing Techniques

Ross - good luck for tomorrow and I hope the weather clears up a bit. It's a good idea to fish up there in the sheltered area. I'm interested to see how you get on and must try it myself some time...

Re: Fishing Techniques

hey kiwi,
i catch all kinds of fish that way. if i'm not top water fishen thats the way i like to do it. well thats not all true. i love to free line live bait, exspecialy shirmp, big ones. i just love live bait. i like to use that rig from a bridge or a boat or from shore when i want to get a long cast out. i think that it helps the fish find the bait if its just above the bottom than when its burried in the mud or grass. mud minnows, shrimp, and pin fish all will hide in the grass if you give them the oportunity to do so. its natural for them to hide from preditors or if they are out of their home enviroment. so if you fish them on the bottom and they have some place to hide, they will, and the chances of fish passing them up are increased. snook, sea trout, reds, snapper, cobia and flounder to name a few are fish i have caught this way. they don't always haunt the bottom but its a natural place for them to feed on hideing food. so i just let them see the menu. i think if you fish you are a redneck at heart. non rednecks buy fish at the store because they are afraid to get stinky. and if thats true than the world is full of them. history is full of rednecks. i would say that we were the first humans on earth. Jesus was a fisherman and thats good company. so you see, being a redneck is an hounor and a privlage for me. as far as the shoafin priest... have you ever watched the tv show "kung fu" with david caridine. its an older show. well if you have you have to read the " removeing a hook from your person" post and then read the " blind fishing" post and you will see where crabby and i started the whole gung fu thing. its a lot of fun. ;)

Re: Fishing Techniques

Hi Derwood - thanks for explaining the live baiting. It's all new to me, I've never seen that done over here (not saying that it isn't done here though). Yes I remember the "kung fu" show - that's going back a bit. I'm now enlightened as to where gung fu and shoafin priest came from after reading those posts. And I thought you might have been a Zen Warrior guru or something. :D

Crab Bait - just to show off a little of my redneck knowledge of American history; The particular flag in my previous post is the Third Confederate Flag, "Never Surrender" which was used by the Army of Northern Virginia, led by General Robert E. Lee. ;)

AMEN .. that's amazin' you take interest in american history .. that particular flag ,i didn't recconize. but it still sported the ( take off our hats ) STARS & BARS an it almost brought a tear to my eyes , flyin'in the wind .. ( cool graphic, kiwi ). your nations flag is a handsome flag for sure !! i got ta thinkin' what ROSS said about the mason-dixon line ..HECK,,, come to think of it ... can't get no farther south of the " dixie line " than NEW ZEALAND , come to think of it ,,,, all you's are a bunch of HILL JACKS ...

Re: Fishing Techniques

Crab Bait - the stars on the NZ flag represent the "Southern Cross" which is a star formation seen only from this part of the world. I read the other day that the "Stars and Bars" is also often refered to as the "Southern Cross".

Yep, a bunch of HILL JACKS...LOL :D

Re: Fishing Techniques

yes crabby you are correct, jesus was a carpenter and with all those fishen buddys as deciples nobody can convince me that he was not a fisherman as well. you just can't be on a boat with a bunch of fisherman and not wet a line. i have got to see if i can locate the southern cross on my star program. they say that you can see it from hawaii and southern florida. i am in central fl. and have a nice telescope. i'll try with the binoculars first. chances are slim but you never know, it would be pretty low on the horizon here but if i can get to a couple of high spots i know i may be able to see it. after consuting meade star finder i don't think i will be able to see all of it.... at least not now anyway. i hope the live bait thing helps you. it may just be my opinion but thats how i see the nature of things, and i catch fish that way so it works whatever the reason. i have fished in shallow clear water and wittnessed the shrimp and other live bait do this very thing. fish find them when their not hooked and hideing but why make it tough on them. plus you get to practice makeing knots and rigging stuff up the redneck way. an art all its own. belive it or not i know a guy that made his own spinners out of a bud can because they were red and white( and being a redneck he had plenty of em...ha,ha) he said they worked well but i only saw them in his tackel box so i am still skeptical on that one. got kinda misty looken at that flag. :D

Neville didn't catch anything because he's standing there wearing that "traffic avoidance yellow" PFD. The fish could see him from 100 feet down. The fish gods are NOT pleased!

Re: Fishing Techniques

It's easy to figure really. We both fish two distinctly different styles and usually one of us gets into the fish and the other changes over to their style. Today Neville was sulking because he caught all the fish on his own boat the day before fishing his style. He couldn't figure it out so there we were.
I like to fish with a 1/2oz sinker right up on the bait and drifting away from the boat. Neville likes to fish with big weight so he's directly under the boat. They both work well, just never on the same day.
Ross

Re: Fishing Techniques

i think " fishin' experiance " boils down to NOT WHAT TO DO but to know in short order to change up on what your doin'to another style ... good GUNG-FOO HAS MANY STYLES.. they all work but not everday.. the worst thing is to do ( an is so easy to get suckered into ) good one day an not the next an stick with that style that worked GREAT yesterday .. old shoafin preist sayin' "YOU CAN'T CATCH YESTERDAY'S FISH "

Re: Fishing Techniques

Derwood - did you manage to see the Southern Cross through your telescope ? Legend has it that spotting the Southern Cross was considered good luck by the ancient mariners. I still feel lucky every time I look at it. Maybe it'll please the fishing gods and help the gung fu ?

Re: Fishing Techniques

not yet kiwi. every thing has to be just right in order for me to see that low on the horizon. see the farther you look away from strait up through the atmosphere the more atmosphere you have to look through. that includes heat waves and polution and clouds and trees and hills and frowning wifes ( who you dragged outside in the skitters to see some dots in the sky.) according to meade i will only be able to see part of the southern cross at this time so i will have to identify some stars arround it to be sure of what i am looking at. there are some realy nice things to look at in your part of the planet at night. do you look up at night much? yesterdays fish is right. the fish here have more tactics than girls have shoes and differnt colors of nail polish.( and thats alot.) as far as when to fish i would have to say i like first light. the water seems to come alive as soon as you can see your bobber. after that you've got to start thinking like a fish. hey its easier than understanding what a woman wants...right. to catch the fish the same way the next day in the same spot you have to go to publix. mostly anyways. with my luck lately the fish will pull a reverse zaa-be-da on me and i'll be five miles away while they have set up camp in one spot. go fishen when you can and you will catch something even if its just some relaxation away from the office. good luck and good gung fu ( tight lines )
;) derwood

Re: Fishing Techniques

I have a dumb blonde fisherlady question? I would like to use live bait i.e. shrimp or mullet to fish West Galveston Bay (saltwater). I know there are sand trout, redfish, flounder, black drum, golden croaker and the like.

Which is the best bait for these fish and how would rig the bait?

Any information would be appreciated especially on how to rig the bait. We are going out this afternoon to give it our best shot.

Also, would you drift fish (there are several oyster reefs) or anchor down?

Re: Fishing Techniques

Well, ya'll were too slow to respond. :( We came back with a big fat ZERO. We used live shrimp and weighted corks. Had to anchor down since the winds were about 20 MPH out of the south. Fished in a couple of good spots (according to the GPS) and all I caught was a hardhead.
