I started this thread because of a conversation between RossJ and myself about fishing and Auckland boating locations - that all started up in a thread about kicker motor brackets.

Ross started telling me about drift fishing for snapper. I'm interested in hearing anything more that Ross or others have to say about this subject.

I'm also interested in what types of lures, rigs, bait and techniques people are using for fishing in the sea.

I'm not the world's best fisherman, but I'll have a think about what I know and share what I can. I'm keen to learn more, so thanks in advance for any of your "trade secrets" you want to share....

Re: Fishing Techniques

Squid - (white squid) is great bait for catching snapper. I've tried a whole lot of different baits including mullet, pilchards, trevally and other common types - but always get the best results from squid. It was very noticable on several trips when the squid ran out and we started using other baits, the action slowed down.

Squid is good and tough for holding onto the hook too - you hardly ever lose your bait. Change your bait every 20-30 minutes. Fresh seems to work much better.

When it comes to bait - I swear by squid! ;)

Re: Fishing Techniques

LOL - CB you're right about squid not stinking as much as other bait. It's hard work keeping the boat from getting that "fishy" smell - and I'm sure the bait has a lot to do with it...

I've never used lures much - mostly stuck to bait fishing with burley etc. I know lures are great for trolling, but what about still boat fishing ? I'm thinking about doing some experimenting, but some good advice might save me some time.

Can a lure be as good as a big juicy piece of squid (or other bait) ?

Re: Fishing Techniques

been catchin' some H U G E strippers on the susquehanna flats in very northern chesapeake bay , by the "HEAD-OF-THE-ELK".. it's the USA's number one atlantic spawning grounds for strippers an it's a catch -an-release only RITE NOW.., season ends tomorrow.. it's the top of the bay and it's like a B I G lake average depth is 4 foot & is all sand.. we/i use lures .. anykind of top water/sub surface plug . best this year is a ' BROKEN BACK ' (jointed ) lure swallow diver .. MAN-O-MAN ,KIWI ,, IT'S WHAT I WAIT ALL WINTER FOR . you talked about the "fishy smell " left in your boat ,,,, i got the same problem,, got to get a 40 inch stripper ( rock fish ) in the boat to remove the hook & since the " FLATS " are fresh water ,, i don't clean it as much,, it also has that C A T SMELL TOO !!! cottonpickin' cats are gettin' in the boat at nite !! MAN I DO NOT LIKE CATS .. there also usin' my seat cusions to claw on !!! can't keep nothin' anymore these days...

Re: Fishing Techniques

LOL - same problem down here in NZ Crab, the cats just can't keep away from my boat - it's that bloody smell of fish. It doesn't help that when I get back from a fishing trip all the local cats come a running - for a feast on the leftovers LOL!.

These lures & floats etc sound like a technical subject in themselves. I think I'll have to go along to the local fishing shop and see what they advise for the fish types in our area (mainly snapper).

Crab - "susquehanna flats" (thank goodness for copy & paste!) sounds like a great spot. Do you ever go fishing in the sea ?

Re: Fishing Techniques

Hi guys, I've got that fishy smell too. I have found toothpaste gets it all off my hands and a good wash gets it off the boat. That "Armorall" we use on the truck plastic seems to work well on the upholstry but be careful as it makes some boat seats slippery. I've read some funny posts about that. It's great on my timber instrument panel. Good on the faces of the instruments too.
Can't agree more with the squid for bait.
I guess it'll be summer in the States soon. We're just comming into winter here (more like autum at the moment), but I've still got lots of fishing to do yet.
Ross

Re: Fishing Techniques

hardly, kiwi.. i only have a 16 foot center console hand built by myself from plans..it's the " little big boat " altho it thinks it is .. i love it !! very stable 6'6" beam ,it can take some rough water .. it's got a tall console windshield conducive for standin'up under power ( somethin' to hold on to ) top speed 30 mph .. only when flat , rough about 13 to 16 mph . just click up a little power trim , alittle bow high she loves, & can take on anything.. altho she thinks it can.. so yes i do ocean but not far & hafta pick my day..fish alot in the delaware bay out of LEWES DELAWARE delaware's first settlement by the dutch soon conquered by the swedes. ( pron. lewis ) an fish the inner & outer walls .. built in the sixteen hunreds.. built so the wooden ships could take refuse behind an take on supplies before goin' up the delaware or sailin' on to europe.. it's a massive wall 2 miles long ..on the other side of the wall is techiquely ocean.. the inner wall is about 3/4 mile long .. then there's the '' haystacks " 5 or 6 huge rock piles for icebreakers.. all built at the same time in the 1600's.. i glad they did cause it makes for a wonderful fishery was goin' to write most of this on the delawhere ? post .. o'well

Re: Fishing Techniques

Crab - I haven't noticed which way the toilets flush, but more noticable is our opposite season to you guys up in the north. Christmas is summertime for us and poor old Santa Claus gets very hot wearing his big red furry suit during the hotest time of the year - but tradition is tradition!

Also - we're pretty much the first country to see the new day. We're 18 hours ahead of your time zone in the mid west - it's 9am Saturday morning as I write this, so for you it's 3pm Friday afternoon. For this reason, NZ was the true crash test dummy for the Y2K bug (which in hindsite was a big non-event).

We drive on the opposite side of the road to you (so we're right at home on RH drive boats) just like our friends in Australia, Japan and the UK. Our currency is the NZ dollar (or "kiwi" as it is commonly refered to). A "kiwi" is currently worth around 43 cents American. Tourists from the U.S. & U.K. find their money goes a long way here (pun intended).

Re: Fishing Techniques

Gents: Its salmon season here in the SF bayarea (bayaria) This time af year we go offshore 3 to 25 miles chasing them. When searching for the schools we troll a plastic Apex in a color that looks like an anchovy. You can also troll with an anchovy by threading it on a leader and banding its mouth shut so the gills don't open unnaturally. You can also troll them with a anchovy nose clip (they can't stink if they can't smell) called a rotary salmon killer. We generally like to use down riggers to get the bait down 40 to 100 feet in the spring, shallower in the fall. We also can fish less than a mile or so off the beach in the fall.
Once we find the school I like to "mooch"; drift fishing with light tackle. This takes a little more feel for the bite. The fish and game makes us use barbless hooks and for mooching we use a circle hook so the little ones can't swallow the hook too deep and get hurt then we can let them go. Have fun and try some cat sushi sometime.

Re: Fishing Techniques

yea , cb rich , fishin' a blast .. yea kiwi , whirlpools , drains , toilets flow counter-clock wise here.. i bet there clockwise there. it's an earth rotation thing..yea , lures to help to catch fish plus your casting , or trolling , doin' somthin' besides sittin' an waitin'.... lures can be used to call fish in from great distances.. with there action & rattle .. also they catch fish sometimes on stubburn days.. the lure gets" "reaction strikes " instead of bait just sittin' there an they can't make up there mind... lures PISSES them OFF.. they just want to kill the annoyin' little *******.. drivin'on the left hand side of the road was started by the ROMANS.. since most people are right handed they marched on the left side to have there sword hand free for opposing traffic..cool huh..

Re: Fishing Techniques

CBRich - very interesting post, you have a good technique worked out there. I'd love to try salmon fishing one day - not so sure about the cat sushi though!

Crab - your knowlege of history is impressive. I'll think about the romans and their swords next time I'm making a lane change. I'm glad there's some logic to it - so how come you Americans chose to drive on the right? You make some interesting comments on the psychology of fish lures - I bet they come up angry when they get snagged LOL!

My next fishing trip is going to make the fish mad, because I'm going to try out a few different types of lures.

Re: Fishing Techniques

yea, KIWI. ain't nothin' like gettin' " snagged " up on a fishes face !! AIN'T NOTHIN' LIKE IT ..not all fish will take a lure . they have to be a predator for the most part.. ask around,, see what works.. an a what depth.. if you get skunked , perservere.. trollin' is a good way to cover alot of ground . vary boat speed fast ( 6 mph ) to crawlin'.. there again ask around .. i'll pick anybody brain unil they walk away .( then i'll chase after them ) . ofcoarse bait has it's purpose ,too.. i'll say KIWI , theres not much in this world better than seein' a big ole' susquehanna flats strippers bustin' on a top water plug .. unbelievable !! it has to be experianced !! there's a techique that i wanted to share.. down in LEWES which is bait & tackle store central.. at this one store they sell a locally made " FLOATING JIG HEAD " it's a regular hook say a # 2 an it has a small foam head with painted on eyes ,the foam comes down about 1/2 way down the hook shank from the hookeye.. simular to a lead head jig hook but this one floats.. ty it to a 2 to 3 foot leader then ty on a SNAP swivel , hook the snap to a trollin'/ cigar shape sinker ( wieght can vary ) 1/2 oz & up ... this sinker has eyelets on both ends... now on your rod line ty on another SNAP swivel an attach it to the other end of the cigar sinker..so what you have is jig , short leader, snap , sinker ,snap to rod line...put a strip of our fav bait SQUID on the floatin' jig head's hook .. cast it out if you can or let out line an drift along..NOT ACHORED.. what happens is ::: the cigar sinker runs along the bottom & stirs things up fish come over to see what's up.. a floatin' off the bottom is this floatin' jig squid treat.. sure does work for me .. even for surf fishin' same thing cast in the wave foam ( suds ) BAM !! anythin' can happen.. you could make 'em yourself glue on some styrofoam , put on a dab of expandable foam & paint it .. to much foam,,,, it sands & shape easily .. make up lots of 'em..

Re: Fishing Techniques

LOL - thanks Crab that's good reading; What a great idea, the cigar sinker and the floating jig with SQUID! I can just imagine that working very well with our snappers too. I can't wait to try it out - a pity the weather's just packed up for the weekend.

Good luck and good fishing everyone !

Re: Fishing Techniques

heres one for ya. i like to slide a small non snap swivel onto my line before i tie on the snap swivel. what i do then is use a smaller lb test line to tie to the other end of the non snap swivel, then i put a large barrel weight on the end of that. the length of line you want to use is up to you. when you are fishing from a still boat if you keep a little tention on the line it will keep the bait off the bottom a foot or two ( depending on how much line you put on the barrel weight) as long as you are fishing close to strait down. the more angle in the dangle the closer to the bottom you will be. the fish don't feel the weight as much and you can feel the light strikes better. works good for live bait. don't see why it would be any differant for the beloved squid. the lighter line will break first if you get hung in the rocks by the weight saveing you some tackel. lots of oyster rocks in fla. this works realy good on snook while fishing from a bridge with live fish as bait. crowing rooster style: floating butterfly technique. :D
derwood.
