Fishermen keep fishing as boat slowly sinks

ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- After receiving reports that a 20-foot pontoon boat was possibly sinking at the Three Mile Bridge, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers took a boat out to investigate.

They found four adults fishing with water washing over the pontoons, according to FWC's weekly report.

When they questioned the operator about the boat's condition, the individual replied, "The boat was dragging a bit on the way out."

Officers escorted the boat back to shore. There, it was discovered that the owner had drilled holes below the waterline to drain water from the pontoons. The screws he used to plug the hole were apparently not water-tight, the report said.

aww, come on Bill,
We can catch at least 3 bass before we sink.
A little water never hurt anyone.

Tell you what,
when the water is up to out knees, we will go back.

Now that's dedication.
Seen it before.
Several years back, a few acquaintances were out all day. After dark, a call came in about the boat dying (sometime earlier in the day). When we got there, they were drifting towards some nasty rip rap. They were not concerned (being 3 sheets to the wind). Their main concern was that they ran outta booze. Another hour and they would have been against the rocks. The fishing rods never left their hands at any time.

We'll,
Were broken down,
so we might as well keep fishing, were not goin anywhere.
And we might as well catch something to eat if we are going to to stranded.
They were survivalists.
lol

I think what it was is that the screws used to plug the drilled holes in the pontoons were the loose screws in the owner's head, but he took them out:p

A lot of people do a lot of stupid things (never me of course :D) but who in their right mind thinks that screwing into metal will provide a water tight seal (forget drilling in the first place).

Oh well.

Maybe they heard about good fishing at artificial reefs so they were setting one up, and proud to be the first ones there!

my brother had a 1970s bass boat that was named "Old Leaky"- it would have 3-4 inches of water above the floor- we wore rubber boots. the portable gas tanks would float--caught tons of fish. no bilge pump- we would take off every 90 min and pull the drain plug. young & dumb and having fun.:D

Re: Fishermen keep fishing as boat sinks

i was out in a nore-easter and had waves breaking over the gunnels, and had a good 6-8 inches in the back of the boat. But was still able to get on plane. You can take a lot more water on, than u think.

I have used the pulling the pulg trick when on plane beofe too to drain the boat. When i did it, i lost the plug, cuz it was on the outside, and i dropped it in the water. Had to get the spare out.
