Fish Livewell Insulation? WHY NOT?

Have 1997 Lund 14 ft Rebel with a livewell.
I love this boat but see many little improvements that I would make if Lund were to listen to me.....

On Lake Cumberland Kentucky, it is impossible to keep fish alive or even worth eating in any livewell during the summer months.

Most fishermen simply drop their keepers into a cooler on the floor of boat.

By adding insulation to livewells, the recirculating water would stay cooler
for long periods of time.
During extreme heat, the livewell could be used as a cooler. (not water)

This winter I plan to use an old Omaha Frozen Steak container to insulate
my Lund boat. (lid, walls, bottom livewell-adding 1 inch of foam)

Advantages:
- keep water cooler at all times
- hold ice during hot summer months
- avoid using valuable floor space in my small Lund 14 ft
Disadvantages:
- will lose valuable livewell space
- will require modification time

QUESTIONS:
1. - AM I MISSING SOMETHING WITH THIS INSULATION IDEA????
2. - Does anyone know of an insulation insert that is available for Lund livewells?
3. - How do I get Lund development to understand that future improvements can come by listening to existing Lund customers.

On two different occasions I have sent e-mails as a HAPPY CUSTOMER on two different boats to Lund. In these e-mails I made some simple suggestions for improvements......

I NEVER GOT A REPLY:mad:

If your live well has a "recirculate" feature, then take some ice with you. When you catch a keeper, fill the live well, drop in the ice and begin the recirculate process. If the live well just pumps in lake water it isn't much of an advantage to use ice since the warm water will quickly melt the ice. It will certainly be better than nothing. You can very easily insulate the live well with expanding foam available from any home improvement store. Drill injection holes in areas around the liner and inject the foam.

Insulating the livewell will cause the livewell to hold more heat. Buy you a set of V-T2's and you won't have to worry about losing fish to hot weather anymore. Me and my partner have used them for 3 years in crappie and bass tournaments. I have fished for over 40 years and it has done more my fish than any product I used. Putting ice in on fish is the dumbest idea ever.

If the bait or fish you catch are designed to live in the waters you are fishing a good recirc pump should keep the water cool by itself in my opinion. Volume is the key here. You are not only giving the fish lots of oxygen but that water flowing at a fast rate and out the overflow keeps them at a constant temperature.
I made my own built in livewell in a cuddy I had a few years back. Aside from having a good lid it had no insulation in the bucket itself. But using a pump that moved lots of water it kept the temperature at nearly what the water I was fishing in was at all times without any need for insulation.
And adding ice to live fish may change the temp so fast it will put them into shock killing them. Not a good idea at all. Fish are very temperature sensitive in most cases.

I hafta disagree with you on the ice being a dumb idea. A lot of people do that (including me) to keep the fish comfortable in tournys. Yeah the ice will melt but its better than nothin. I'm not so sure that insulating it will do all that much good tho. Just my 2 cents...

I'll second the disagreeing with "putting fish on ice is a dumb idea". Out where I'm at that's the only way to keep fish eatable. Put them on a stringer or livewell full of water and they will turn to crap.

I insulated my livewell, 1" foam on the sides, bottom and ends, then insulated the lid with 2 (1") layers of closed cell foam (sleeping bag pad from Walmart). This was the exterior of the livewell, I wouldn't do the inside, the foam would get funky. When I'm heading out I put 60-80# of ice in it (big livewell), then fill it when I hit the lake. Fish go into the ice water, keeps them in perfect condition. Well for eating at least, this wouldn't work for a tournament weigh-in as the fish come out like popsicles.

Couldn't you just put a timer on your livewell pump, I have one on my recirc pump and it goes off for 1 1/2 minutes every 3, it should keep o2 in the water and the water at the temp of the lake or river.

I am sure Lund listens to its customers, that is the only way to stay in buisness for 70-80 years but you may be the only person to be asking for that improvement.

If your going to eat the fish, ice is the only way to go. surface temp water in livewell = bad tasting fish.

Instead of putting the fish directly on ice I generally try to freeze 2 liter plastic jugs of water and put them into the live well. That way the fish are still in the same water and I can switch out different frozen jugs as the day goes on keeping the water cooler longer.

That's a pretty good idea, the block would cool the water down and take a long time to burn through. I cut the bottle off the block of ice with a utility knife though. I don't know how a huge chunk of ice would handle in the livewell, could beat up the fish while motoring around.

The ice floats on top and the fish stay in the lower levels. Haven't had a problem with them getting beat up, the round shape of the bottles also helps.
