Power out of water, No power in water

New member that needs some advise. I have a 1978 6 horsepower Eveinrude that has ran like a champ until this year. Had a carb problem, but changed gas and replaced primer hose. Ran great for 2 -3 trips on the water and now when I put in the lake it starts great, full throttle out of gear and when I put into for. or rev. it only has about 1/3 of it's power. When I took the boat out of water fired right up and put into gear and had full throttle. Is this still a carb problem?

Possibly, but start with the basics and check compression and spark first. If those are good then you may have picked up some trash in your carbs.

No, and probably never was. You have an ignition problem and it is only running on one cylinder. Could be anything from a spark plug to a bad coil.

And don't be revving it up in neutral like that unless you want to scatter parts all over the area.

I never thought it would still be carb problems because of the power I am getting out of gear. Are you sure it would not be the lower unit?

Joe, welcome to the iboats Forum. The experts here, which I am not, can help you fix any problem. However, correctly identifying the problem is the tricky part and you have to help them by following the recommended trouble-shooting steps. Without that, it is only guess-work. Good luck!

On that note, here is what you have to do:
Remove and ground one spark plug wire. Start motor and note how it runs.
Then do the same thing with the other spark plug wire.
I'll bet you will find that it makes no difference with one grounded and it won't run at all with the other one grounded. The one that makes no difference is the cylinder that is not working. Now find out why. Check spark and compression on that cylinder and you will know which way to go. AFTER you try a new plug that is.

All of you have been so helpful. I hope to get a chance to check it out this even and get back to all of you on Friday.

Thanks
