I picked up this beautiful little lund for next to nothing a few weeks back and am trying to plan what I wanna do to it. I have been reading a ton of posts on this site and kind of have an idea of what I wanna do. Thought I would start a thread to track the progress. I know the boat has some issues so i need to address those first. There is a leaky seam on the first seam down from the side when on the water, and the previous owner used a ton of that green goop to seal a "small" (his words) leak on the transom. Im not sure what was small since he gooped up all the way around the bottom and up the sides. so I need to strip that off and see what the issue actually is. So here is a list of what Im doing to it.....

1. Strip off the textured paint inside and gluvit the seams
2. strip sown the outside and get a new paint job
3. remove the middle bench
4. build a sub floor
5. enclose the front from the second bench to the bow
6. add side support for the bench coming out.

I basically want to model this after the newer fury 1400 tiller. I need rod storage and tackle storage built in as well as having the boat set up for back trolling.

This is what I would like to turn it into.

I noticed that the casting platform/bow area is lower on the new model than the side lockers. this appeals to me as I have two little ones and would like to keep them as low as I can in the boat. (one is 4 the other is a week old) I need to make sure I can at least fit a battery up there as I would like to use a bow mount at some point. (was even thinking on fabbing a collapsable bracket to mount a transom mount up there as needed since I will most likely only use this when fishing for panfish.) Should I cut the front bench sown 4 inches or so to acheive this and build from there? Or leave it as is? I will try to get some better pictures this weekend as I am getting slammed at work. Started stripping down the paint yesterday and have about a 3rd of the interior done.

Hey, nice Lund!

Yah, sounds like you have a pretty good plan there. Structure first then on to making the boat comfortable/functional.

Just a heads up....

That new Lund you posted up is a fair bit bigger and deeper than the boat have. You could build out something similar but to get the same kind of layout you'd need a different hull. I can't imagine you'd achieve rod storage but maybe batt and fuel tank could find a home somewhere.

All the best and welcome to iboats :welcome:

I should have said Loosely based on the fury... lol

Right now the fuel tank sits between the back bench and the transom. relocating up front is a Must. Im no abercrombie model so there is a good bit of weight in the back already. :) So when you add six gallons of fuel, and a group 24 battery the front of the boat is a ways up in the air. If I take a wave from the side things get a little hinky. So Im hoping to relocate at least one of them up there.

On the rod storage, I was thinking after my initial post lastnight that I might just add some side box's that run from the transom to the bow platform wide enough to hold some tackle box's and add support to the side of the boat, then add some rod buckles to the top and just lay 2-3 rods per side on it. this would allow me to run a fuse panel and switch panel in the cockpit area as well.

Ive gone over this 100 times in my head and im sure I will change my mind yet again lol. But the big project for now is to get everything stripped and cut out the middle bench. i am leaving the exterior for this winter, but hope to have the inside done by the time the fall walleye bite kicks in.

I'm not a big fan of people removing the benches of a bench boat to make more room... unless they do it right, then I'm a huge fan!

Converting your boat to one like you have in the second post is a good plan/build, but you'll have to do it right to ensure safety and seaworthiness.

The benches in your boat are for structural support of the hull sides and safety because they contain your boats floatation foam. Removing the benches will weaken the hull and do away with the valuable floatation foam... But! Rebuilding the inside of the boat like the one pictured will strengthen the hull back and you'll be able to add new floatation in other places. New floatation will probably be better than the old stuff in your boat now.

In the pic below I've circled some of the structural points of the benches:

Not only are the benches structural, but the braces from the top of the benches to the gunwale also add support... and so do the sheet metal fins that connect the bench wood to the hull sides.

To rebuild your boat right you need to look at a couple of key structural points I've picked out:

You'll need to add a splashwell to the transom (outlined in red in the pic), this will add back the support of the rear bench removal. It should tie back into the side storage compartments for even more support.

You'll also need to the the bow deck into the side storage compartments too (circled in orange), this will lock the storage compartments into the bow deck adding a lot of strength and make the side compartments structural too.

Framing the bow deck, storage compartments, lower deck, and splashwell out of aluminum angle or square tube will make for a much lighter, stronger, and longer lasting build than trying to frame it out of wood.

You can buy aluminum angle or tube at a scrapyard or recycle center for a small fraction of the cost of new. Using blind (pop) rivets will be economical, fast, and strong.

You can add new floatation foam below the lower deck, and in parts of the side storage and bow deck for the safety factor. You can make your boat float like this Lund if you add enough foam in the right places:
Lund Boat Floatation Video - YouTube

A couple of other things to do for a good build is to not use pressure treated lumber or decking and seal any wood in your boat with multiple coats of a good sealer... I recommend using epoxy resin (not polyester) to seal your wood. It's the strongest sealer I know of.

Looking forward to watching your build on this boat, and will be glad to help with any advice I can offer.

what thickness alum plate should I use for the splashwell? I was thinking 14, should I tab it and rivet it in, or should I try to have it welded in? I plan to have the braces on the side hold the top of the side storage compartments in as well as integrating it into the bow section for strength. so that shouldnt be an issue. I ordered the gluvit today and am planning to run and get some ply and alum angle sunday, Im busy as heck with work but should be able to sneak out to get it.

For strength, economy, and an easy build, I'd frame it out of .063 angle and put a piece of 3/4 plywood on top of it well sealed with epoxy resin and then painted. Rivet it to the side walls and bolt it to the transom.

Re: First remodel..... 76 lund 14 foot

havent made it as far as planned, but I did find time today to get the old seat tops off and get a look at the foam, I knew the boat was stored outdoors without a cover for most of the last 5 years, and it looks as though a furry little critter made a home in the boat. theres some nice sized tunnels in the foam and some fur nests. Gluvit is here, after battling the textured paint that is currently in the boat I think I am going to just strip a 6 inch swat on both sides of the seam and apply the gluvit. the parts of the boat that will be seen after the redo are bare metal now, everything else will be hidden. So I will just hit it with a scotch brite before re painting the inside.

Oh Boy! Disease laden rodent feces and urine!!!... just what I've always wanted in my boat! Especially if I'm going to have small children on board.

I'd rip every molecule of that foam out and clean and disinfect that bilge if it was mine, rodent waste is nasty.

Re: First remodel..... 76 lund 14 foot

yes sir! Already on it, the stench was never present until I cracked the first seat. good part is my neighbor just did a bunch of insulating with the pink foam boards so I was over there today and accumulated a good pile of scraps he had that I can use. I might pop the motor off int he morning and head down to the carwash and give it a full rinse down. Just waiting on some small odds and ends stuff to finish prepping for gluvit, then i should be able to at least have the inside painted. I decided I will prob, keep the back bench as my plans would have had me re building it with angle anyway. so I think the boat will be rigid enough that i shouldnt have to worry to much about bracing. I will however still be putting some compartments on the sides for tackle and such.

Re: First remodel..... 76 lund 14 foot

Update for this week. I finally got some time off work to keep working on the boat, I pulled it out of the garage yesterday and tried to start it and for some reason it wouldnt fire, this is weird since it pulled first start the first few times I took it out. I know I ran some bad gas through it so I thought that was the culprit. Took off the carb and re built it since it came with the kit, fires an runs again now. set it up on a 50:1 amsoil diet and she was purring like a kitten for 2 hours in the yard.

Spent yet more time stripping paint. talk about a pain in the rear. im down to the back bench now and should be done after one more day. Also cut out the middle bench and started framing in the bow area. should be another week or so and it will start looking like a boat again! lol

ordered the vinyl I decided to go with for the floor. its interlocking tiles that are normally used around pools and on decks. they were recommended by a fellow tin boater who re did the same model boat a few years back.

Pics to follow tomorrow night, gonna try to lay some self etching primer in areas that I dont need to worry about now, as well as drag it down to the carwash and wash it down tomorrow.

Re: First remodel..... 76 lund 14 foot

Heres how it sat at last post, I was able to get some of the areas primed and a little bit of paint laid down friday night. Gluvit should go down on the seams tomorrow, but its supposed to be right around 100 degrees and humid as can be so im not sure if I will get it done or not.

I also picked up the aluminum angle for framing in the side compartments this morning before work still have to figure out how I am going to do it with the vinyle floor but Im thinking it will be nice since the vinyl drains.

Nice project Eric. I have a 1975 Lund 14 foot runabout that I have been contemplating opening the bow on so it fishes better. I'll be watching your progress.

Well for an update its been way to humid to do anything outside. so I havent gotten much done. I started to prime and paint the nose of the boat but even that is taking way longer than it should with the humidity so I figured I would wait for better weather to do it. hopefully this week we can get some better weather and get stuff done.

Re: First remodel..... 76 lund 14 foot

Progress has been made! Gluvit went down three days ago, that stuff is wicked, I had never used it before. Filled it up with water to the waterline and let is sit in the driveway while I was at work, no leaks. So tonight I got to work priming, roughed up the gluvit and primed the whole inside of the boat, Kinda weird to see it all in one solid color! Going to pick up some more paint in the morning before work since two cans was hardly enough primer I figure 4 cans of actual paint should do. Will get pics when I get it pulled out in the driveway again.

Re: First remodel..... 76 lund 14 foot

I am using rustolium self etching primer, and rustolium light grey gloss for the top coat. I got the top coat laid today and now Im letting it cure the next two days while I work. might even get it out on the water on sunday morning. hopefully. pics are on my phone will update when I get them onto my computer! shes coming along nicely! Also started filling orders for rods today, so weird to work on a boat in the morning and build ice rods at night. Is it really going to come that fast?

Re: First remodel..... 76 lund 14 foot

whats the best way to cut out the plywood for the front deck? Ive been scratching my head for two days now on how to do it. I tried cutting out some cardboard but still couldnt get it just right.....is there an easier way?
