First boat purchase - Advice/Recommendations appreciated

I'm new to the forum an have done quite a bit of searching on the site and would now like some feedback on what I'm looking for and planning to tow with.

First off, the tow vehicle I'll be using to pull a boat/trailer is a 2008 Honda Pilot with the factory hitch and coolers. I wanted to throw this out there as I've done lots of reading on using the Pilot for towing a boat and read a fair number of comments and reviews already (like get a real truck and such). Based on my experience towing with the Pilot (large tent trailers) I think it'll be adequate for my needs but I certainly don't want to over buy when it comes to boat weight. It'll be the only tow vehicle as I'm fairly certain my John Cooper Works MINI Clubman can do no better :D. Max capacity for the Pilot is 3500 for a travel trailer and 4500 for a boat. I'm looking to stay under 3000 fully loaded (fuel, gear, etc.).

I'm hoping to pick up a bowrider at the end of season for a decent price. Ideally I'm looking to spend $8000 or under and am looking at Bayliner, Searay, and Maxum as they seem to be most common in my area. Bayliners stand out because I'd be looking at a much newer boat with fewer hours than the others although I know I'd be making a few sacrifices as well in niceties. As an example, I'm finding Bayliners at this price point in the 2004-2007 range with less than 100 hours whereas the others I'm looking at 1998-2000 with 200-400 hours.

Being that this is our first boat I'd like to learn from others experience. We plan to use it mostly for tubing/wakeboarding and just enjoying time on the water. 95+% of the time I'll be towing it to a lake 15 minutes away (down a fairly steep hill which is about a mile long). My kids are young (8 and 10) and I figure if we really get into it I can upgrade the boat/tow vehicle in the future but want to minimize the investment until I get a feel for how much we'll use it. Oh, and I want the boat to pull me out of the water with the family in it (I'm 6'4" and about 230 lbs).

Ideally I'm looking for a low hours bowrider with no time in salt water (common in these parts) and a wakeboard tower.

Couple of question I'd love input on.

  • 3.0L versus 4.3L - I've read quite a bit about concerns with the 3.0L having enough power yet I've talked to people saying it's fine, just put a 5 blade prop on it (and lose some top end).
  • Salt water - It's rare to find a boat that hasn't been it in. Is this critical? Are there things an inspection can find that will help here?
  • Hours - Is there a limit I should avoid or expect to dump money into the boat?
  • Inspections - things to look for? What can I expect to pay someone?
  • Size - My guess is I'll be looking at a 17'-19' boat (ideally 18' for the wider beam and lower weight). Any input here? I'd hate to get the 17' and regret it but would also hate to buy a 19' that is too heavy. The wider beam on the 18' is appealing although the lake I'm going to be going to gets very little wind/chop.

I am sure I'll have more questions but that will get me started.
I appreciate any and all input.

Thank you,
Todd

3500 max towing? Will you have any passengers? That rating is with zero passengers. If you add a 200 lb passenger, you now have 3300 lbs left for towing.

Get a marine surveyor (they will charge about 20 bucks per foot of boat). They can address many of the condition issues you ask about, because it all depends. I've seen 200 hr boats that were crap, and 500 hour boats that were amazingly nice.

Engine: 80% of the time, buyers regret getting the smaller engine.

Size: 80% of the time, buyers regret getting the smaller boat.

Salt water and exhaust systems: Ask your surveyor, but if a boat was used in salt, have about a grand in reserve to go for a new exhaust.

Fuel: When you start dropping cash for all boating repairs/maintenance/etc, you won't think fuel is expensive.

for $8000 grand you can get an 18-19 with a 3.0 in i - NO PROBLEM. I have seen a few around here with under 100 hours in that price range. If you are willing to buy now you can save even more as people want to unload them for the winter.

3.0 will be fine for tubing and wake-boarding - I am 222 and mine struggles to pull me up on one ski with a load in the boat but I like to drop a ski anyway.

Like Philster rightly said a marine surveyor is highly recommended

on the engine side of things the 3.0 will give better fuel economy cruising and will have enough power for water sports, but, when you get up to 30 knots the fuel economy is pretty much equal to a 4.3. Also with the 4.3 you will have more acceleration, top speed, and pulling power.
Basically if a 4.3 comes along and checks out ok, buy it. if a 3.0 comes along for the right price and checks out ok, buy it
Both are good engines and both are adequate.
Good luck on your purchase!

It can be dne, and it can be a lot of fun.

My tow vehicle (Toyota Sienna) is rated for 3500lbs too. Fine on the highway, even some hills, even with passengers. Have to be careful with ramps (my Sienna is front wheel drive). But my boat is only 1750lbs, including gas, battery, engine, and 150lbs of gear. I was looking at boats with a dry weight of 2200lbs and am glad I went small.

Mine is a Four Winns, 16' and 60HP OB. I do not expect it to pick me up on one ski but maybe a kneeboard or wakeboard. It certainly was a fun summer for the kids tubing. Remember, a boat that weighs less requires less power.

I would also think hard about getting a trailer with brakes or installing them afterwards due to the hill you mentioned.

I've got an '72 18' with a straight six I/O - weighs in at 1,300lbs. + trailer. The pilot should be fine to pull a boat that size.

Take a look at the boat ramps you intend to launch from. Pulling down the road is not usually the problem. Yanking the boat back out of the water is where the power/weight/capacity issue becomes critical in many cases.

Bringing the thread back to life.

I ended up buying the first boat I looked at after looking at a number of them. The survey came back extremely clean.

In the end I picked up a 2002 Sea Ray 182 with the 4.3L and a aftermarket (dealer installed) tower on it with a Shoreland trailer. I couldn't be happier.

I sure like mine. Bought 5 years ago with 90 hrs on it for $10k. With the swing tongue it fits in the garage ready to go all year. I keep it purty and clean and have had compliments. Knocked a hole about the size of a quarter back near the tank fill. Did a poor patch job on it and put a sticker on it of a Piranna. So know you know her name. Enjoy!

Awesome! You'll enjoy it. I bought mine last year, it is a Bayliner 195 with the same engine. We love it! I actually just put a tower on mine...
