First Boat Need Info About Maintaining Motor

Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased my first boat. Its a 1977 KingFisher with a 1977 Envinrude 85 hp outboard. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a couple things about the motor. How would I go about filling the power trim fluid. The power trim moves down just fine but is slow to come up. Was going to try to fill the fluid first to see if that eliminated the problem. Also, What is the recommended oil to use. I am pretty sure the ratio is 50:1. And my last question would be, how do I and what would I need to hook the water hose to the motor to let it run out of the water. Thanks for the info in advance.

yes it is 50:1

raise the motor all the way up, put it on the trail lock if you want, the cylinder on the right is the fluid reservoir. remove the screw and squirt fluid in until it runs out the hole........ if you suspect it may have air in it you can work it up and down a few times and refill it.

make sure all your connections are clean and your wires are good and battery charged.

I also have read somewhere that ethanol messes the motor up. Is this true? And how exactly do I mix the oil and gas. Do I need to mix it externally then pour it into the fuel tank or just put the oil in the fuel tank. The first logically sounds better but I am clueless as this is my first boat of my own.

Mixxing gas- #1 put gas in the boat - #2 dump the correct amount of oil in the tank, done.

There is no special way to do it, as soon as you dump the oil in it mixxes with just the movement of the boat and once mixxed it won't seperate.

If you are going to maintain this boat yourself get an OMC manual(NOT Clymers-Seloc or any CD) best purchase you will ever make, ti will cover your engine only and has any info you could ever need, a must if you are going to work on the motor.

If you keep a printout of the BRP maintenance chart it will help as a reminder of things to be checked periodically.

The most frequent complaint with ethanol is that the older fuel lines are not alcohol resistant and that the lines are breaking down. The rubber is a hydrocarbon which when exposed to other hydrocarbons like oil and gasoline will eventually either plasticize or soften anyway, so the best plan is to replace them with new lines when possible.

The alcohol in ethanol dissolves the resin in older fiberglass fuel tanks, but there are relatively few of those tanks around anymore.

The largest number of recent discussions deal with the problems of phase separation and water accumulation in the tank. Gasoline and oil float on water, and water eventually finds its way to the bottom of the tank where the fuel pickup is located. So, full-sized water separating fuel filters are a practical necessity at this time where ethanol is used.

I'm not up on your motor, but others have shared their knowledge.

On the ethanol issue, consider installing a spin-on fuel filter/water separator. Also get fuel treatment to add to the gas to offset the issues created by the ethanol. Get the blue sta-bil, not the red sta-bil; or other stabilizer made for ethanol-blended gas. Sea Foam may do the trick also, but read the label first.
