With epoxy resin, it's ok to use cellulose, wheat flour, walnut flour, sawdust, fumed silica filler. With Polyester resin use fumed silica, glass bubbles, no water absorbers? My understanding is the difference is in the resin?

Question for the pros: Is Polyester porous after cure, and Epoxy is non-porous after cure? just cure-ious LOL

Epoxy resin is very resistant to water absorption

Vinylester resin is more resistant to water absorption the polyester resin & less then epoxy

Polyester resin is the least resistant to water absorption

Here's a small sample of the iboats Poly vs Epoxy thread discussions:

Use the Advance search function & search polyester vs epoxy resin

You can use
google.gif
& search the same: polyester vs epoxy resin

Lots of info out there, ultimately, for me and many others, most boats are generally made w/ poly resin, it's lasted 20-60+ yrs and is less expensive then either of the other 2. Add the ability to work multiple layers at once & a relatively quick cure time, and it seems an even better choice then the others. Use of epoxy does not always negate the need to use cloth in structural areas requiring strength. Avoiding the additional cost of the fiberglass cloth, that is required w/ poly, is often the basis for choosing epoxy over poly, remove that 'benefit' and epoxy seems an even less attractive option.

But just like my advice about flotation foam & paint options: Look around, study info readily available @iboats and the internet, and decide for yourself what of the available choices best suits your budget, time frame, abilities & how available those choices are to you. Epoxy, vinylester & polyester resins all bring good stuff to the table, but are best suited to some applications & not others.

Having almost instant access via a local supplier can easily out weigh the product cost savings from online sources that may take a week or more to supply your materials and require substantial shipping charges.

Poly and epoxy is like freezer and fridge .. they both serve a function but are two totally different application.

Poly is just fine done correctly .. Epoxy is not fine done incorrectly ..

Its the fillers that you use. You can use 'fairing' fillers .. or you can use structural fillers. Where and When is up to you.

If your Fairing .. then use the balloons .. if your structural then use something structural ( like cabosil ).

Fillers like cotton flock or wood chip/saw dust is an application thing. Use these additives under descretion depending on the application.

There is NO perfect mix for Everything .. there are multiple mixes for application ..

YD.
