Re: Fiberglass schedule

Sorry I was out for a few days with my sons birthday..

I like to use micro balloons.

Your going epoxy with the resin so you can use epoxy light filler of some kind ( not rock hard cabosil ).

Re: Fiberglass schedule

In this situation polyester putty and epoxy putty would be so close to the same in hardness it wouldn't make a difference, neither one can be compressed under the stringer. Most builders that do use something under the stringer use a low cost polyester putty with a good deal of filler in it. Filler tends to decrease the bond and reduce the strength, they use this same product to bed other things too, sometimes it holds up, other times it doesn't.

Bondo is even worse.

Like YD said, Micro balloons will work, they don't make a strong product, but it may make it a little softer. It won't make much of a difference though.

Like ondarvr said .. your just looking for a nice roll on the glass go get any bubbles out of your glass on your tabbings.

Thats the reason for the "backer fill". .. just to have something solid to roll your glass into a Voided or 90 deg. lam.

Re: Fiberglass schedule

Thanks Guy's!! YD, hope it was a great one!! Only reason I ask was they repeated several times to not use anything stiff under the bulk and mid stringer. They used 2 3/4 ply for the engine stringer, then the bulk is a 1/2 ply that ties the enginer stringers together, then the mid section stringer 2 3/4, then reduced down to a 3/4 from the middle of the boat forward. They were concerned about the point the mid reduces down. I have West Systems 407, "blend of Micro B's here in the shop........not enough.

Thanks!!

Yup..any fairing compound you can use. As long its weaker then the stringers/bulkies/fiberglass hull you can use.

I personally dont like the PL ( or caulk method .. but thats just my opinion ).

Re: Fiberglass schedule

Well....i did not like the PL much either. but after looking at the ton of epoxy and MB's I would need with all the mixing.....and they are not easy to mix, decided to go ahead and use the PL under the wood then come back and create the fillets with PB.......that PL srue does bubble up really bad

Re: Fiberglass schedule

Yep it does, and it requires a minimum of 72 hours to cure before you can glass. The "outgassing" of the PL is what causes it to bubble. But it's only required to keep the wood off the hull. The Glass tabbing and layers is what gives you the strength and disperses the weight across the hull. With enough glass lams, the core material can go away and you're still good to go.

Thought I would give it until Wed. I only used it under the stringer....decided to try and create the fillets with PB. Thanks Wood!!! Hope all is well!
