What is the best method you have found to prepare an existing fiberglass surface to apply fresh resin and glass?

Sand it down to good clean glass....wipe down with a good amount of acetone and lay up your mat and resin ;)

How near perfect does the fairing compound need to be? I have applied 1 layer of fairing and I can feel that it isn't perfectly flat after sanding and some air bubble pockets. Will the gelcoat fill in all of the little pockets and will I be able to sand the gelcoat to near level and it be just fine?

No Title

This is one of several patches on this side of the boat. You can see the little pockets.

If there are small pits in the surface don't worry about them. Right before you apply the gel coat use a putty knife, or anything with a flat straight edge and smear the surface with gel coat, it will fill all the small pits. Immediately wipe off the excess and spray right over the top of it.
