Re: fiberglass boat needs repair

welcome to i boats......this is a really good place for your question and im sure we can help you,

but im not sure i understand the problem.......

you say the fiberglass is coming off.....is that the gellcoat or the actual glass....if the glass is comng off on a 14 footer....your sinking !

can you post pics?

go to photo bucket up load and reduce the size to 480 x 640 somthing or other....then copy the img tag and post in in a reply....

ok....the only reason for glass delamination is a bad or dirty repair job....this should not happen on a factory hull that has not been repaired.....

anything you seal it with will also come off as bonding between the layer and the substraight is the problem......however "laminating epoxy is a very good glue...and may help......

but im only guessing with out pics......

post pics to help us help you

cheers

Those Sears Gamefisher hulls were made by MFG, they had a very thin gel coat that wore away over the years exposing the bare fiberglass fibers. On the one I had here a few years ago, I just primed, sanded and sealed the hull and put on a coat of good epoxy paint.
You could sand and re gel coat the hull but it's probably not worth all that work and painting works just fine. I take it you have one of the white hulls with blue trim and seats?

Those hulls were also double fiberglass with a foam core. Pay close attention to the outer hull and any deep scuffs or gouges in the keel area. This can let water in between the inner and outer hulls both soaking the foam and adding weight to the boat. Nearly everyone I've seen has been either patched on the keel or was worn thin and leaking.
They do make good fishing boats though. The older ones seem to have been gaining some collector value as well. There's a strong following here for those boats. Even the worst examples still sell.

Many of those boats had no gel coat, they just tinted the resin. When gel coat chalks and comes off on your hand it's just a fine powder with no glass, when the tinted resin comes off some of the glass comes with it. Paint will work and is easy to do, now you just need to decide which paint to use.
