You took your electric drill to your rod? Weren't you worried about breaking it? (the rod I mean). You mean a little hole all the way through the trigger, front to back? did you take any precautions to avoid shattering or splintering the plastic? These may sound like silly questions, but this no-baitkeeper thing is driving me crazy and your idea is the best I've heard; I just need to avoid doing any damage! :)

Thanks!

If the rod doesnt have a hook keeper i just wont buy no matter how good the deal is. Kistler makes the best one ive seen so far. Dont have to unhook the plastic to put it on the rod. :D

Re: favorite brand of rod and reel?

Hey jt, It's really simple. I used a small, multi-speed dremel drill. I drilled straight through the center of the trigger. I started out at a slow speed to start the hole. The type of plastic these triggers are generally made from isn't rigid enough to crack or shatter. It should be solid plastic. After I drilled the hole, I went back in with a small file and smoothed out the edges.

Re: favorite brand of rod and reel?

nice idea.why cant you just buy keepers and glue them on were every you want?

I bought some extreme rods a few years back and the reels kept poping out when alot of pressure was applied so i took a dremeal and carved out the seat so the reels would seat properly, anybody else ever notice this. The rod seats at the ends on the inside are half-circles and the reel seats are square with a slight chamfer so they dont seat properly?

I'm sure it's pretty easy to add a real hook hanger to the rod, I just haven't looked into it. All you would need is the metal hanger, the right glue and tape and you're set. All my spinning rods have hangers, so it was easier for me to just drill the hole on my baitcasters and be done with it.

I'm pretty much a dedicated Garcia person. I use 5500 C3's or 4600 C3's for crankin applications and Ambassadeur XLT plus reels on everything else.

As for rods, I've always been partial to Bass Pro Shop rods since my first one 30 years ago.

Basspro oughtta be more picky about the products they put their name on.

Those basspro rubber hookhangers break on the first use. absolute crap. (I drilled a couple mine out the other day...I like it!)

The basspro brand analog scale - will get condensation inside obscuring your view of the scale, prompting you to break the front glass (plastic) off...eventually the needle will break off. absolute crap.

Basspro brand marker bouys, as they age develop leaks, eventually they will sink. pretty crappy.

But the basspro rods, base model graphite, are great value for the $$$, IMO. (just had to throw that in after dissing their branded accessories). If you like the BPS rod, try the berkley cherrywood, good quality graphite rod, $10 cheaper. Faster tip I think.

racer, you mean the inserts fall out of the guides, or the guides fall off the rod? I've never used allstar but they been highly recommended. Did you try taking 'em back?

Re: favorite brand of rod and reel?

I've still got a diawa reel with flippin switch from about 12 years ago...in flipping mode, the bail re-engages when you release the thumbbar. Back then you couldn't push the bar up with your thumb like on today's models, which I think makes that feature obsolete.

racer, ever forget the switch is on and try to make a cast? good way to get a laugh out of your fishing partner! ;)

Since I only fish for bass and crappies; I really like my shakespeare spin-wondereel 1756 (have about 5 of them) along with an ugly-stick. Although they were made way back in the fifties...
they are very easy to use and back-lash free.

I like to troll for trout so I bought a Cabelas DepthMaster Gold series reel. I Like to troll about 100 ft or more behind the boat and the line counter reel helps with knowing how far back you are. I mount it on a 6 ft Ugly Stick light rod.

Favorite rod and reel?

Depends on how I'm fishing.

Ugly stik lite pro in a light action
St Croix sc2 light action
St Croix sc2 medium hvy
Basspro 8.5' ultralight walleye rod
old berkeley 5'6" cherrywood

I have plenty more, but these are the most used.
Also have some St Croix and Loomis blanks that I hope to do up this winter.

You can add a real metal loop hook keeper to any rod, if you care to take the time.

Didn't quarrow sell out or go bankrupt awhile back?
There used to be several/many dealers in WI, now there seems to be only one.

Well I jusy bought a Daiwa Pixy airy red with a IZE spool and ZPI carbon handle with cork 4 bearing knobs, which is the sweetest reel! Pairing that up with a Kistler Helium LTA.

I think you should start out with a used zebco 202 when you get a little more experience you can move up to a 404. I hear the pros use 33s but I never could afford one.my best bait caster is a pflueger TRUMP trade mark 1043 mounted on a square 4 steel rod. :D :D :D :D
