Re: favorite brand of rod and reel?

I am a dedicated Shimano user- Stradics for spinning and Curados for baitcasting. I use all Compre rods and love the combos. They last and that is where it's at for me. I've had too many $100 reels go south after just 2 years from use. I still have an original Aero Stradic that must be 10 years old and in still quiet and smooth.

However, I so stray in one area. I catfish the Ohio River routinely and have 4 Ugly Stiks with Abu 6500C3s rigged for the boat. All identical and work great for that style of fishing.

UFM82

Okuma matched with Ugly sticks for big fish. Phluger matched with Gander Mtn Guide series for Bass and walleye

I've always LOVED the curados. On a whim, I picked up a couple of falcon cara rods and have the curados on them now. The rods are decent but that's about it. Really sloppy feeling compared to what I like. I still love my old loomis. I stripped it down and tied it with titanium guides and it's the best rod I've ever used. My next rods will be loomis

I love my Ugly Sticks. My favorite is a 7ft. Med-
Hvy UglyStick Lite graphite with cork handle. I have a Quantum CBC30PTs Reel mounted on it which I also love. I've looked at much more expensive rods, but stick with these.

Ok, Ill get in on this and show my ignorance.

A reel winds in the line and hopefully casts smoothly and has a decent drag system.

The pole helps you cast, offers leverage, has different sencitivity and can make a difference on the action of the bait at times.

Different rods and reels for different situations and baits.

I have lots of rods and reels. My baitcasters are just the standard old ambasaduers, and I have settled in on the Quantum snapshots for spinning. For rods I have an asortment from berkley to shakespear. I take the real Im going to use into the store and match the rod to what I want it to do. I am extreamly happy with all of my outfits now. All be it that I have accumulated them all over several years and got rid of the ones I didnt like. I myself see absolutly no reason th spend hundreds of dollars for the latest and gratest of anything. My average rod reel combo is around $50-$75.00.

Now, with that said, dont let me try one of your expensive outfits or I might change my mind.

Re: favorite brand of rod and reel?

My Shimano, AllStar and XPS Extreme are all very nice rods but the Mitchell Fulcrums that I use for pitching and another for my spinning reel are the ones that would bring me to tears if/when I set the trolling battery on them. As far as reels, Shimano is it. For me anyway. The Abus are very well built but are pretty heavy and I just ain't a fan of round reels. I have a S5600C that I got on clearance at Wally World for $40 that I use for a catfish reel and it's not too bad. New reel tomorrow? Curado. I rebuild reels as a hobby and Shimanos rarely need anything more than cleaning and maybe a pawl. Best customer service of any company I have ever delt with. Worst? Quantum.

Come try some of my stuff and you WONT go back.
loomis GL3/ chron SF Kislter LTA spinnin/ Biomaster
Loomis spinnerbait/curado SF Loomis GL2 spinnin/ Biomaster
Crucial/ Scorpion MG St. Croix premier spin/Symetre
Crucial crank/ Scorpion Croix Avid UL/Pinnicle
Loomis heavy crank/ calcutta
St. Croix Avid crank/ Curado
shimano Crucial/scorpion

IT really doesnt matter what you spend on rods and reels as long as YOUR happy with them. When you try high end stuff the cheaper stuff will seem like junk. To each there own I guess.

Like I said, I dont want to try anything new right now, I couldnt afford to upgrade if I wanted so I dont want to be tempted. Someday when my ship comes in and Im not at the airport when it happens, I may think about it.

One thing I know for sure, I would be "MUCH" better off if I had a better baitcast for pitching. Ive got the flipping thing down, but the pitching I dont have yet.

Re: favorite brand of rod and reel?

I have 5 kids crawling in & out of my vehicles. I don't like junk but I would rather not have to file a claim with my insurance co. if my favorite fishing rod was to get a door slammed on it. Geez I saw one rod in a well known shop upwards to $300. Too much for me. I'd worry more about it getting broken that catching fish.

The day you see me paying more than $50.00 for a fishing pole. You need to take me and have my head examined!

Ah its not the job (wink) its that i dont spend it on other things. Rather get some great rods and reels than beer or sigs. Fishing is my addiction and passion so I need to feed that . :D

Funny I should post this and now it looks like I will be getting a bit of money! Guess I could buy some new equipment now if I want to.
