Extra parts? Where do they go?

I'm in the process of replacing the water pump on my 2007 Alpha 1 Gen2 (which I have done before). When I pulled the lower unit off, 2 of these plates fell to the ground. I don't recall seeing them before & I cant figure out where they go & what they are for. I've looked at the parts views in the manual & I don't see them shown anywhere. Does anyone have any idea??

Those are exhaust flappers go in the top of the exhaust wye pipe . They do wear out but also get damaged by lack of water flow due to lack of impeller maintenance or blockage in raw water system.

This is what it *should* look like when these flappers haven't failed. This is looking down into one side of the exhaust y-pipe. This would be where the riser exhaust elbow would connect to the exhaust pipe.

These flappers are like "one way" valves and they prevent water from coming back into the engine from the transom assembly. Like Scott06 indicated, these often fail if there was an overheat condition that occurred. Anytime there is an overheat condition, the "rubber" that is in the exhaust circuit becomes suspect. These flappers are part of the "rubber" in that circuit.

Thank you for the explanation! Makes sense why I couldn't find them anywhere in the outdrive! I found in the service manual where they belong. I've ordered replacements. Should I be concerned that there is any damage or debris in the exhaust system?

Nope, just make sure to clean all the crap out before reassembly.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... Hopefully the ssteel pin is still in it's holes at the top of the y-pipe,.....
