Been working on a 3.0 1988 Mercruiser for some time now. Problem is it will bog down on WOT. I noted that a previous owner had replaced the coil with a napa coil. It states on the side of the coil that it must have a external resistor, is the coil wrong for this application? Should it have a internal resistor?

Rather you have the correct coil or not, I have no clue, but you do need a coil with an external resistor. Mercruiser uses a resistor wire in the wiring. aka external resistor.

Unless someone modified the ignition system then you need to know if the new ignition parts use an external resistor.

When I switched to my electronic ignition I had to remove the resistor wire from my coil.
