extending tongue

Alright fellas, how would you extend this tongue? its measures out to 3x6 square tube, Sleeve inside? (hard to find that will fit). Butt weld 3x6 square tube and reinforce around? let me know what you guys think..

Oh I like these problems!

Yeah you could sleeve it but I think I would just cut out the existing 12 inch(I know its probably longer) tongue and weld in a brand new one, I think that if you do sleeve it it will be fine but why? the existing tongue is so short you will probably have more issues then its worth so I would just cut it out and replace it.

Butt welding it without a sleeve would not be good BTW

thanks CJ, didn't think about cutting the hole tongue off and starting over. it will be hard trying to find a 3x6 to slide in

Right, and if you just cut it out and replaced it with a more common size you could even throw a hinge on it for the breakaway tongue if you wanted, besides its not like were talking about a 6' tongue here, yours is pretty short(kinda feel weird saying that to another Man) so by cutting out the short one and replacing it with another tube of steel in a more common size you gain a little bit of versatility, not that you need it but its still there.

I don't think I have seen a 3x6, but one of the Fulton folding hinges would be the easy way.

The problem with a folding hinge is the odd size of the existing steel. Folding tongues sleeve over the base metal and then weld on, if you have an odd size tongue your hosed.

There is a hinge kit for 3"X5" though...
