Re: Explain it to me...

A very small amount of money was provided by federal grants to build the memorial and museum. It is run by a non-profit. They aren't making a profit. They are trying to cover costs.

If they ever get government funding, I am sure they will lower admission.

 I can't wait to see that

Re: Explain it to me...

I think people are not fully thinking this through. The operating expense may seem high however, it is not ALL going to be paid for by visitors but the visitor income will assist in the other monies collected. It is not going to be an empty building and the rents will cover the majority of the cost.

I have researched further and there are other discounts available but none listed for Vets....... that one frosts me pretty bad :(

I lost 5 classmates in the initial attack, I have a good size group that are still injured from being trampled by the evacuation in the stairwells, and our former "late" moderator Lester (spinner bait nut) lost his brother there too.

Here on iboats we have allot of ties to the World Trade Center which include people who lost family, friends, people who actually worked on the original construction and people who have worked on the new construction. We are part of the family here.

I won't be going as I think it is a boondoggle, I will get crap for this but people died get over it. At some point we will use all our land for memorials and graveyards so soon we will have no land to grow food.

I am most certain you might think a little different if you can put faces to the names carved into the stone at the memorial, or put faces to the names on the graves of the servicemen who sacrificed so this does not occurr in your backyard. Many of us here can do both, including me.

Adults who visit the Sept. 11 museum at the World Trade Center will be charged $24 admission. The foundation board that oversees the lower Manhattan museum voted Thursday on the admission fee. Families of Sept. 11 victims won't be charged. There will be discounts for children, seniors and schools.

So if I read it right, the ONLY people paying full admission are the tax payers that footed the bill to build it???

$24 general admission price set for NY 9/11 museum: Associated Press Business News - MSN Money

It cost just about the same amount to visit the observation deck of the Empire State Building a mile or so away. They too offer discounts and do not charge tenants. Same goes for the NASA space center. There is nothing new about private or gov't facilities charging full price to adults and discounts to others. Heck, seen the price list at the box office of a movie house lately. Just the way of the world, and it's up to you to decide if it's worth it.

No because of what many of these people did for a living, they were not fighting in a war like those in the military

Neither were the terrorists. That's the point, dear moderator. Not to mention the fact that I put my own warning. Pardon me for thinking we're mature human beings. Oh, and the kids lived through 9/11, I think they can handle a cuss word, or two ;)

Edit: If you have questions about the moderation of the site you can reach us by PM. No discussions in the open forum. In this particular universe we are omnipotent! ;) :p :)

I am unclear who the "others" are? The list you supplied: "Families of Sept. 11 victims won't be charged. There will be discounts for children, seniors and schools." seems appropriate.

Wow, come on guys, this need not be political, I was simply talking about how the tax payers that built it have to finance it while others don't.
Taxpayers are not financing the $60 million dollar yearly operating cost. That's where the $24 comes from.

Yes, I fully understand. Tax payers footed the bill to built it,
Actually almost all(90%) of the funds to build it were private donations.

The US Holocaust museum has an $80 million dollar annual budget but get $51 million for the Feds with the balance made up by private donations as a comparison.

Re: Explain it to me...

OK, so this entire thread boils down to charging Elderly, Children, Schools and the Victim's families? If so, you're good to go?

OK. Next issue?

Trying to get any politician to support this kind of stuff, just doesn't really exist in today's govt system. That's just one of the sad truths about our current times. The budget does sound extremely costly, but I haven't been there so I cant speak beyond what I see in general terms.

Re: Explain it to me...

My question is why does it cost $60 Million dollars a year to operate? I know this is a not for profit, but this article thought it is from 2012 gives the salaries. These seem rather large, and the last line states 80% of its revenue came from Government grants. Seems to me they could cut the over head
