exhaust causes motor to cut off

My 85hp Force will run with the cover off. How/where does the carburator get oxygen and how is the exhaust expelled from the motor? Any ideas are are greatly appreciated.

i saw this problem before when visiting boat shop. if you were standing on back of engine look downin the bottom of engineand there is a rubber hose that carries engine exhaust out. its got a hole in it somewhere. with engine cover off you are gettig plenty of oxygen thru carbs. with engine cover on you are pulling engine exhaust back thru carbs. you will probably have to take the skirts around engine off to get to the hose
