1983 150 Evinrude using an excessive amount of fuel. Cant find any hose or carb leaks but smell raw gas in exhaust. What can I do, carb adjustment, carb or fuel pump rebuild kit?

Re: Excessive fuel use

My 87 Johnny uses fuel like it thinks I own a refinery but it gets about 1.85 miles per gallon on the GPS. That's at different speeds during the day from trolling to WOT. It also smokes a lot at times and always stinks. But its 26 years old and has never let me down.

Re: Excessive fuel use

While I am NOT a guru on 2 stroke carbs, I do believe that they have some things in common with 4 stroke carbs.
There are little holes in them to allow air to bypass, which helps meter the fuel. If they are plugged you will get a rich condition.
A good carb overhaul should clear up that issue.
If you don't know what your doing, have them done by a pro. Trust me, you will happier in the long run.
My old 84 johnny ran like **** until I had a pro do the carbs. Man what a difference!!! :)

i would take the reed valves off & hold them in the dark towards light & look for gaps i have found this with a 70hp although it was starting & running but on plate had a little gap & was just pissing the feul instead of turming it into mist when the reed valve is supose to flap 135 time a second to make the mist or what ever k

How's the mtr run overall ?? Being a 150 hp it should use 15 gal/hr at wot.
