Evinrude runs for1 minute then stops

Hi all,

Working with a friend on a 1959 2 stroke 4 cylinder 50 hp Evinrude. Had it running for 1/2 an hour on the lake then turned it off. Now when we start it, it runs for a minute then stops. Before we dig too deep ourselves (we are only somewhat handy), thought I'd ask for ideas.

Too many possibilities. Go through the normal checks: check for spark, check compression, check fuel system (spray some gas/oil mix directly into carb. If it starts up for a few seconds, then likely a fuel delivery problem).

No spark on one or both cylinders: ignition problem
Low compression: piston, rings, head gasket to name a few issues
Fuel delivery problem: stuck float, bad fuel pump

Other issues, sheared key, bad kill switch. If you are planning on working on it, be sure to get a good shop manual.

Thanks for the response. Just got a good manual and seemed to have narrowed it down to a fuel delivery problem. We will check out your ideas of stuck float and/or fuel pump.
