Hi Guys

I need some help, i'm running a 1991 50 HP 2 stroke oil injected Evinrude on the back of my RIB and am experiencing some running problems.
About 3 weeks ago the engine kept dying at full throttle, and would only run at about half the rev range, this turned out to be a faulty impellor which was replaced by a compitent mechanic close to me, the engine has run fine on two consecutive weekends out and even done 75 miles last weekend but while out last Sunday the same dying out at full revs happened again, the engine took ages and ages to get restarted and eventually when we did get it going again all we could do was half revs again which was just enough to get us home.
Can this be the impellor again as when i felt the power head the engine felt warm, not red hot but just very warm and the water comming out of the pee hole was also warm, when the impellor failed first time the mechanic removed the thermostate and this has not been replaced yet as we are currently in summer and the engine will run ok without the thermostate there didn't seem any need to replace it at the time, the engine therfore should be running really cold, could this be another problem happening somewhere else which is causing the impellors to go or is it something else ?

Thanks for all your help and advise

Richard

Re: Evinrude running problems

RhibRat

A really cold running engine is not a good thing. It can never warm up to operate properly. T-Stat needs to be replaced. Also, get a thermomelt stick at the dealer to check the engine temp to make sure it's not overheating again. You simply apply this to the head and if it melts, it's getting hot. You should be able to hold your fingers on the head for a few seconds if it's not overheating. If you trust this mechanic, I'd take it back for further diagnosis and to have the T-Stat installed.

Rhibrat....just another suggestion to go along with Ricks good advise. Ask your mech to check out the alarm horn and make sure it's working. From your first post, it dosen't sound like it was. The horn also gives the warnign tones for VRO trouble. If the horn has already been checked out....Good Deal.

Re: Evinrude running problems

Thanks guys for the advise, i've talked this problem through with my mechanic and after reading your advise i'm not actually sure overheating is the actual problem this time as i was able to keep my hand on the powerhead for ages without burning and the water comming from the pee hole was warm not hot, he things it may be the ignition coils and says one may be failing causing the engine to cut out at high revs, does this sound correct to you guys? he's also going to take a look at the water jacket in case somethings blocking it somewhere. I'm due to meet him on the water on Thursday evening and we'll run the boat up and down the beach for him to see it cutting out and check temperatures, i'll also ask him to replace a new T stat too, if one of the coils are bad i may have him just change both out and be done with the problem.

Does all this make sense to you guys though, he actually has an interest in getting me back on the water for the 13th September as im booked down to do safety boat cover for the local yacht club for there annual big off shore race and he actually runs the safety boat teams :)

best regards

Richard
