Evinrude Repairs

Hey Guys,
So I just started my first working on my first outboard morot. It's an 1953-1954(I havent checked out the modle number yet) Evinrude 15hp. I bought it needing repairs. I was told it needs new ignition coils, to clean put new carb parts in, a new water impeller, and a tune up kit, also the gas lines need to be replaced. I was wondering if you guys might have some advice on how to do this or if you guys have any pics or videos you could share of how to do this. thanks for any advice you can share.

Hi Kudos! Welcome!

I have one of those...mine is a 1955 15HP...aka Fastwin Aquasonic.

There are many many posts on here regarding all that you need to know. And; there are a lot of people here who own the 50's OMC motors. If you haven't already...search using "Fastwin".

Can we see a picture of your motor?

Step number 1: Take a compression reading. Let us know what you find and go from there.

You should take it one step at a time, you are after a full tuneup so writing a response for that would be tiring on the fingers

Pick a step and ask for help regarding that step.

Do you have the needles and choke knob for the carb? Is that a salt water motor, some of the fasteners seem to have seen better days

Looks like it's gonna be fun kudos....

If I were you I would do the compression test like High Trim mentioned.

Then; I would go through from top to bottom and try your hand at loosening all the screws that you will need to remove to do the work you've outlined. Stubborn fasteners can make a fun job turn to misery real quick. Hopefully not too many will give you issues like breaking off and all. Go ahead and pop the flywheel. Drop the lower unit. Do these things before you lay out any money for parts.

Then; once you've convinced yourself (and maybe some of us here) that you want to make the $$$ commitment to proceed you can order the parts.

Get us those compression numbers....

how do i do a compression test? i know it has compression but thats itand yeah i have all the knobs for the carb the fine tuning knob for the lower speeds is stuck but ill get it freed up eventually and most of the screws i got lose just some were a little stripped that ill go back to... and it was a freshwater outboard only.

Get yourself the type of tester that screws into the spark plug threads. The ones that just push in are tough to use on a pull start motor.

What your looking for is similar PSI on each cylinder; no more that 10% difference.

so i started to pull the outboard apart and i undid all the bolts on top of the fly wheel but i cent get it off to get to the coils. there were three little bolts and then one big nut to take off. am i missing any?

You're almost there

Now you need a puller. You can go to an auto parts store and borrow/rent a Harmonic Balance Puller. It pushes down on the crankshaft while pulling up on the flywheel. That's what those three small threaded holes are for. The puller might come with the Grade 8 bolts (1/4 20) otherwise you will have to get some.

You will also need to find a way to hold the flywheel from turning while you torque down the puller. Strap wrenches work OK...there are many other methods.
