I have 1979 16' Mirro Craft with a 1979 Evinrude 55 HP and a Power Pilot control box. My problem is when ever I or a family member adjusts the throttle friction screw the control locks up and only shifts into forward and wont go all the back into neutral. I have done this twice and my father has done this once. Everytime it happens I just take the box apart and put it back together and it works fine after. If I tighten the throttle friction when the box is apart it doesn't lock up. It also doesnt matter how tight or loose the throttle friction screw is when I put it back together, as soon as the friction screw is moved the box locks up again. The boat is new to me so I dont know if it will be fine aslong as nobody touches the friction screw or if i'll be driving along and it will happen. If anybody has any ideas on whats going on please let me know!

I would also like to add that when I take it apart it doesnt look like anything is binding or loose and there seems to be plenty of grease.

My next question is what controls will work with my motor? I have read about the red plugs and i'm assuming thats what my motor has but will my cables work with any 1994 and older OMC control box?

After you said that any 1979 and up will work I started to doubt if the motor was a 1979 so I found a website that lists the model numbers and year, according to the model number on my motor 55875S the motor is a 1978. I cant find any other website to verify this, does anybody have any idea. If it helps the serial number is E0005038

post a picture of the cable connections inside your control box, we can tell from that.

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format. 640x480 max.

Power Pilot is the remote control used from 1973 through 1978. The engine harness with the red plugs will work on the 1979 and up remote controls with the red plugs.

I know 1994 and earlier controls will work electronics wise but I want to make sure my cables will work with the newer controls since it looks difficult to change them.

Model 55875S is indeed a 1978 55hp Evinrude. Any Evinrude/Johnson control box that incorporates the RED electrical plug will work with your engine.

Get rid of that troublesome accident prone waiting to happen control.
