Evinrude fuel connector question

Hi all, i have just been given a 1978 9.9 evinrude and i am very new to outboards. I have changed fluids, plugs etc. Inside the engine cover all looks very clean. My question is regarding the fuel connector from the tank to the engine. I brought a new Attwood connector and clamped it to the fuel line from the tank, i put an Oring on the fuel inlet on the male engine piece.
As soon as attach the connector to the engine fuel pours out from the connector any help please?

there is more than one size of connector. make sure they match

It shows an o ring in the maual. I am pretty sure i have the correct connector as it clips into the male connector well

Pull the O ring off the male connector. They normally go in the female side. Anyway, the seal needs to be air tight.

Are you sure you got an Evinrude/Johnson connector? I bought a Yamaha connector once, thinking it
was the same, and it leaked fuel like you are describing.

As said previously, pull that O-Ring off the male connector. I have never seen one there. It is holding the fuel line connector away from being fully seated but on enough to allow fuel to leak out. Check to see that the latch lock tab of the fuel line connector is snapping INTO the retainer groove on the alignment post. Our bet it that it is not, with that O-ring there.

I, too, have become victim to the new attwood connector. I believe you are talking about this connector, correct? Watch video to see male piece.

I have this connection (unfortunately) on my tank, do you have it on your engine?

the machinist is correct. the manual shows an oring. This oring is inside the female connector. does not need another one.

the o-rings dry out in the female connector. when they do, they leak. the connector needs to come apart to replace the o-ring. I picked up about a half dozen last time I needed one - simply due to the plethora of johnyrudes that are amongst friends and family.

Thanks all for your responses strolltroll my attwood connector has two female pieces one for the clip and one for the fuel. I am going to try putting the o ring in the female

maybe I'm confused here, but with a new fuel connector no additional o-ring should be needed as the connector already has o-rings and the fitting on the engine doesn't require one

Hi again all and thanks for all your replies, Here is where i am. I notice in evinrude parts the male fuel connector has a pin protruding from the end. The male connector on my engine does not have this pin but it does not look like it has broken off. Maybe i need to replace the male connector on the motor.
I have a new one but it appears to be different the existing connector is fixed to the engine with a large screw from the top and the new one does not have a threaded hole for the screw.

Sorry to appear like a real idiot here but anyone want to explain how i fit the new fuel connector to my motor.please.....................please

the male connection shown is one for the gas tank not the connection at the motor...the fuel line connection at the motor is pretty much bullet proof..look to the hose connection if you have fuel leaks at that union

here is what you need for the male end on the engine, notice there is a pin/checkvalve on this connector but not all have it, and its not needed.

and the female connector to the male end on the engine will have an o-ring in the end under the metal collar that seals around the checkvalve in the picture. the barbed pin is for the catch.

Thanks again all for your time taken to help me. Now I understand the piece I showed should go to the tank. That problem solved..........
And as Ait n has said and the info that nwcove gave me clears things up a lot. I am thinking that maybe I have the incorrect Attwood adaptor to go onto the motor connector. The package said use for Evinrude and Johnson motors but maybe I need to invest in a new one from an Evinrude dealer. I am thinking this because when the connector I brought snaps on after a very hard push but there is still a little play between the two connectors.

Usually IF the female end snap lock lever snaps onto the male guide pin that is far enough, there may be slight gap at the rear joint, but if it snaps on AND is the right size it should work. The snap lock positions the female end on the male line end, which the spring loaded center pin of the male end pushes a ball bearing seal in the female end to open up the line for fuel to pass thru. If the snap lock may become unlocked, the fermale end can work itself out far enough to re-engage the ball seal & shut off the flow.

With a new fuel line assembly, you do not need to add any O-Rings.
