Re: Evinrude Fisherman 6

I did have it on start, and past that. The carburator.... looks like a complicated job, I have the manual that shows how to do all that, wanted to see if it will fire up!

Re: Evinrude Fisherman 6

you said ..NO SPARK...is that correct still?

no matter your fuel problem...you will need to get spark...

verify you have it

Check this link that JB wrote:

This is a snip of his article:

manual start: Flywheel rotates but engine does not attempt to start. .
Remove a spark plug, reconnect it and hold it against engine block. Keep it there while turning engine over.

Does it make a hot, blue spark when attempting to start?
If no, troubleshoot ignition system.

Has hot, blue spark?
Squirt some fuel mix (NOT ether) into the carb(s). Does it attempt to start? *
If yes, you have inadequate fuel. Troubleshoot fuel system and review starting procedure.

This is link how to check your coil, condensors, and points.

This a basic plan how solve some issues with a motor.

Look at the iboats links I originally supplied, they have links for removing a flywheel, checking the coils, points, condensers, and how to set your points with a feeler gauge.

You will see a lot of experience guys ask about compression, spark and fuel. (They are using a systematic approach to diagnosing an engine problem or problems....in this order)

C= compression ( if your compression is low or uneven between cylinders >10% then others checks don't matter until the that is resolved) (I know you have check compression, but added this for systematic approach information)

S= Spark (if your having problems with your ignition then you can have the cleanest carb and great fuel delivery but it will run bad or not at all)

F= Fuel (if your carbs are not clean and the fast/slow idle needle are not set right then it will run but like crap. If you have it set too lean then you run the risk of poor fuel/oil delivery and damage your pistons and cylinders then you run into the problem of C (poor compression from damage).

Re: Evinrude Fisherman 6

I was wondering about the thread size on the 3 screw holes on the flywheel? I have a harmonic balancer, but the assorted bolts are all too big. # 8 means grade 8 right? anyhow , that would be great help

Thanks

It is 1/4 screws, just so I understand, the points need to have a gap .20 meaning when I look at them they should not be com-pletely together right? my points sandwiched together, i'll try to gap and see whats happening.

1/4"-20, grade 8 or better bolts for the harmonic balancer puller.

0.020" for the point gap

Removing the Carb is a real pain in the Butt. Hopefully you don't have to.

Go here:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=338579

and pull your flywheel off, and see whats wrong with your ignition.

For a novice, I recommend doing the carb last.

If you need step by step picture about how to do anything to that outboard let me know, I have a lot of the 6er's

remember the points only have a gap when the heighest part of the cam pushes them open..otherwise they CAN BE CLOSED!!! ...so gap them ONLY when they are opened on a cam lobe!!!

if I am remember right from my points motor days

Great engines. I own a 1974 Johnson 6hp myself and it's a great little runner.

I think your Ford 308 is actually a 302.:D

Anyhow, these little 6's are very simple to work on and very responsive to a good tune up. The one you have there looks to be in nice condition.
