I have recently bought a Evinrude 9.5 1965 (model 9522C) and discovered that it has been fitted with a water pump from a 1968 (model 9822D).

I am getting gear oil in the water. I have replace all the lower gasket and seals in the water pump and repalced oil ring in the shift changer shaft.

Oil is still pumping up from the gear case past the new seal (Light brown and foamy)

I dont think the water pump Oil seal is doing its job and I am wondering if the Seal in the 1968 water pump will fit the shaft in a 1965? The shaft size in the 1965 is 0.550 inchs.

Can anyone recommend a site where I can spec out the seals? Or can anyone tell me if the shaft size changed (got bigger) in the 1968.
The 1965 seal# is 303345
The 1968 seal# is 313282

Thanks

Both engines call for the same part number driveshaft, both call for the same pump housing.
Is the shaft worn where the seal contacts the shaft?

The oil seals is located in the lower plate are different sizes (they have different numbers). The OD of the bearing differs by 1/16 of an inch. the 1968 being the larger. I cant get the specification on the inboard diameter.

I relocated the shaft seal lower down in the housing on the second try to fix the problem so the seal would seat on a part of the shaft that is not worn. Didn't make a diffence. The seal feels loose on the shaft. I can figure out why this is the case unless the shaft is bigger on a 1968? I take you point about part numbes being the same.

Why don't you just install the correct seal?
303345 = 18-2022 (sierra part number)

I meant to say the OD of the "seal" is bigger on the 1968
