1970 Evinrude 85HP, 85093D
So, my tach didn't work... battery is not being charged, read up on the forum and found that you can replace the stock rectifier with a radio shack 25A job. I did this, and noticed when I took it off most of the insulation was rotted off the wires on the old rectifier and it was EXTREMELY corroded.
Anyways, with the new rectifier hooked up the tach now works! However, I also noticed that there's a large black box beneath it that says Motorola on it something or another with three or four wires coming out of it.. I believe a blue one, a red one, black one and maybe a yellow. Anyhow, one of those wires was totally shot, corroded insulation gone, etc. I tried to patch it with a piece and hooked it back up. I'm guessing that thing is partially responsible for battery charging?
Another question--none of the diagrams or anything indicated WHICH of the AC terminals on the regulator (two wires) goes to which terminal. I.e. there's a yellow wire, and a yellow/gray wire that come out of the rectifier that go to two different terminals. Does it matter where the AC wires on the new rectifier go? I just hooked them up to where the other two went in no particular order. Mainly interested because the battery is not charging--I put muffs on and revved it up a little and reading a steady 12V.
