Evinrude 85 not charging battery

Hi Guys..

I recently purchased a '71 Crowncraft 16' boat with a Evinrude 85 outboard. I tested the battery with a load tester and it holds a charge just fine. The battery is less that a year old. I found out that the battery is not receiving a charge. The voltage stays exactly the same with the motor running, or with it off. I verified this with a separate volt meter also. Any Evinrude mechanics out there that could shed some light on my situation? Where to start? Maybe a stator, or voltage regulator? Thanks! Shawn R.

Do you know how to test diodes? Your problem is most likely a blown rectifier. That would be the cylindrical thingy with a trangular base, two yellow wires and one red wire. Check back if you need instructions on how to test it.

Re: Evinrude 85 not charging battery

Disconnect all 3 wires. There is a diode between each yellow wire and red and a diode between each yellow wire and ground. 4 diodes total.
1. Connect your ohmmeter between one yellow and red. You will have either a high or low resistance. Reverse your ohmmeter leads and you will have the opposite resistance. That is to say it should be high one way and low the other.

2. Do the same with the other yellow and red.

3. Do the same with one yellow and ground

4. Do the same with the other yellow and ground.

If it passes all 8 tests the rectifier is good. Otherwise it is toast.

Also, while you are at it, do a resistance test across the two yellow wires from the stator that were connected to the rectifier. Should be a low resistance continuity. Then check from one of those wires to ground. Should be no continuity to ground.

Don't go putting a new rectifier in without cleaning your battery cable terminals at both ends. Don't just look at them and assume--CLEAN them shiny bright!! Dirty or corroded or LOOSE terminals is what blows rectifiers. That and installing the battery backwards, even for a brief instant.

CAPTAIN,
MY GAUGE SHOWS SOME RESPONSE BUT ALWAYS STAYS IN THE YELLOW 10-12 NEVER IN THE GREEN UNLESS AT 3500 RPM THEN ONLY AT 12 1/2. STILL THE DIODE OR JUST A SHORT SOMEWHERE?

karl it is best to start your own thread so that you dont confuse the ppl trying to help. Have you performed the diode test? Start a new thread with your motor, model number , symptoms and questions and im sure you will get some help. GL
