Evinrude 6hp/7.5hp outboard dying then refusing to start

Hi all been out today for a blast, but ended up been a short one and involved lots of rowing! fun times :facepalm:
The engine is an evinrude 1982 belgian model of 6hp, its the same as the 7.5hp 82 model but had a restricter in for europeans, anyway its 7.5 now unrestricted.
As its belgian, the models numbers arnt recognised by most people. I guess the nearest model number would be E8RCNR. (looks identical and parts the same)

At full speed after running for 10 mins twice it died in a big gargle and wouldn't start again for 15 mins after like 100 pulls. the 3rd time it did this it wouldn't start again.
The thermostat cover made water sizzle and steam so thinking its heat related, but it pumps like a hose perfectly. Be taking a look tomorrow afternoon. be greatful if anybody had a few suggestions they could chuck in to anything that could be causing this.

Will also add that some weed was possibly restricting the prop at some points and i did a few water checks on the water coming out and it was luke warm to cool and the was some STEAM coming out of a discharge vent at the top of the shaft.

Personally i can only think of the thermostat but honestly i'm a novice and if waters pumping good how can it be. plus i wouldn't know how to fix it if it was Help appreciated thanks guys.

Sounds like a t-stat to me. The overboard water indicator (tell tale, pee stream, etc), hooks into the cooling system as it first enters the motor, so you won't see it get hot at all. The t-stat is at the tail end of the cooling system just before it dumps out. If the t-stat is failed closed you won't get water flowing through the rest of the cooling system.

Yeah I was sort of thinking the stat but wasn't sure how it worked, I just new it was to do with the temperature and I can see what you mean here, it sounds right.
Well I'll give it a look tomorrow and test the stat, hopefully that will be the problem and a new one will sort it.
