I recently bought a 6hp evinrude, i cleaned the gaz tank and put new gaz/oil with 50:1 ratio, changed the spark plugs and changed the water impeller, i tank tested the motor for a good 20 mins and no problem at all...and then

I was using my 6 hp evinrude yesterday on some pretty good size water. Everything was going fine then all of the sudden it just died.I cleaned the carb and I am having no better results, any thoughts ??

Fuel pumps good, and im getting 60 on both cylinders, the plugs spark fine

Also, if i shoot some gas/oil mix into the spark plug hole, motor will start for 2-3 secs and dies again...??!?

Help me please, i just bought this little motor !

Must be something in the carb you overlooked if you've made sure you have fuel feeding to the carb at the supply line from the fuel pump. Float level with carb body? Careful with putting pressure on the float's needle valve. The tips can become damaged easily on these little valves and sometimes stick in the closed position. Make sure the needle valve "pull down" wire is intact and tight enough to pull down the valve before the float would hit its stopper tab or the float bowl floor.

i think 60 is to low.
i had 2 of 6hp models(73' and 78').
i had compresion around 90 psi in both motors
i think this can be the problem
few post down someone run 6hp motor with compresion 90, 100

Alright here's an update, i went to my friends place (which my motor is at as of the past 2 days) and his father got it up running but with the carburetor not in place...by spraying the hole with gas/oil where the carburetor should be bolted on....

We bought a repair kit for the fuel pump, and one for the carburetor, everything should be installed fine and gas do get inside the carburetor but it seems like it doesn't get sucked into the engine block.

Here's a video of us running it by spraying into the hole....any thoughts? lol

Thanks again and sorry for my english =)

You have me puzzled. I'm not too worried about compression as its probably good enough to suck in the fuel.....it should be a bit higher but those geared down rope starters don't spin very fast for a really dynamite compression test anyway. Something is still wrong at the carb. Gotta check things over 1 more time. Besta luck..

Bump......

so i brought back home my motor...it has been sitting in my friends garage for a week....

I pull it once without it being in a water tank and it starts on first pull !! So i stop it imediatly and put it in a water tank , start it again and on first pull it starts again !!!

Unfortunately after 1 min, the motor just stalled like it did on the lake, and now it wont start again (no gas i assume)

Now the gas DO get to the carburetor but it doesnt seem to get past it...(see video for reference lol)

No holes seem to be clogged...unless i missed something???

Here's a few more pictures for you guys, maybe you could then tell me what could be the problem.

Did all the core or welch plugs get popped out so any and all fuel/air circuits were washed clean or did you just use carb cleaner in the spray can.? Remove any and all core/welch plugs, remove high/low speed idle jet/s, remove needle and seat and let soak overnight. Then rinse with fresh water and blow-dry with clean compressed air. Make sure high speed jet is clean, can also run heavy test line through jet/s and reassemble. Low speed idle screw bottom out lightly then turn out 1 1/2 turns to start. High speed is fixed, no adjustment! Post back and let us know. BTW. float setting, invert carb and float should be parallel with carb. If not, adjust as necessary. If it has cork float, set it on fire and get new plastic one! Check low idle speed jet to see if the tip is bent or broke! With clean fuel, Start and let it warm up in tank or muffs, adjust to best lowest idle you can get. Will need to be tweaked when out in the lake in gear.

What is a "welch plug" and jets ? and all we did was blow-drying with a compressor in the holes

See below:
#27=high speed jet
#10=core plug that should be removed and all the passages underneith cleaned.

How can you remove that #10 core plug, i cant seem to be able to pry it out with a small screwdriver....and i cant push it from the inside cause i dont have access to it.

Would any carburetor cleaner found at canadian tire for exemple work? or any specific one required? (to let it dip in for a while)

Sorry for my newbieness =( trying to get it fixed cause I would like to go fish walleyes this weekend :D

Take a small drill and just drill through the plug. Take a pick or a small punch to pry it out. Don't drill in to the carb itself! Allow the carb to soak overnight and nothing plastic. Berrymanns carburetor/parts cleaner works well.

Sounds like the same problem I may be having.
Cooling water somehow getting into a cylinder(s).
I thought it was a Head Gasket, and I changed mine (was pretty easy) but hasn't fixed my problem.
I started a new thread this morning
