I'm considering to buy a small outboard with a '72 Evinrude 40hp motor. The seller does not have more information (the boat is currently stored) like the exact model number of the motor.

Being a newbie with boat motors, what are some of the obvious things I should check as I inspect the motor?

Thanks for any pointers.

Have the seller put it on rabbit ears and start it for you.Make sure the water pump works and it runs before you talk about a price.Make sure it doesn't leak oil from lower unit as well.

amfm,

The '72's were electric shift.

If you do not know a lot about outboards, I would avoid it.

They also came with manual shift. I have two new 1974 40 hp LU's with the shift rods.
