I recently purchased a 40HP Evinrude,Yr. mfr. unknown. no manuals, etc; the tilt assist gas cylinder is frozen in the tilt up position. Removing it was no major problem; all bushings, etc... seem o.k.
(A)Does anyone repair/service these things ?
(B)Is there an alternate item to replace the original design ?
(C) Do "we" have a $$$$saving source for parts ?
I will appreciate any and all input.

Hi Glacierbear
I don't know of any alterate item to replace these things. Anything that is cost afective anyway. They are a pain. They are not repairable. They can be replaced at costly sum. While you have yours apart, check to see that the operating cable and lever are functioning properly. Try disconnecting the cable from the cylinder. Clamp one ennd of the cylinder in a vice. Pull\push on the valve rod with pliers. See if you can get the piston to move. I have been fighting with mine for years. Fortuneately I have a jet pump on mine and do not need to tilt it often. Some how I feel, if I could get more travel (more pull than the lever will allow) of the cable, it would free the piston. I do not belive I could restore any type of assist. Let me know what you find.

Did you try to take the cable off and sticking a screwdriver under the valve-end and lifting it that way ? My problem was the cable-housing (worn through and just bulging, not pulling).Good luck, Frank

Thanks for the feedback; I did try Frank's approach(no luck); will follow thru on alcan's suggestion. I've checked the cable, it moves freely, I'll try the pliers trick and go from there. Again, thanks for the quick responses.

I am going to look into the worn bushing/ housing that Frank suggested. This may give me the throw I think I might need. This would at least allow me to tilt the motor.

I have been looking for a rebuilder of these things for 3 years. Haven't found diddley-squat.

Also been looking for a power tilt/trim rebuilder. Same result.

BTW I did find a supplier of small, powerful 12v hydraulic pumps. If I can get my hands on a bad manual tilt cylinder, I bet they could be converted to power. Sure would beat $500 for used one of unknown quality off e-bay.

Hi Frank!

Yep, put her back together last weekend. Fogged it, washed boat, put on cover and stored behind shed for winter. It sure did run smooth while I warmed it up. Can't wait for next spring.

Things well in Holland?

Re: Evinrude 40 HP "tilt assist"

no luck on repairs; I got the valve on the cylinder turn freely, but won't budge "up" or "down. I found a good used electric/hydraulic lift kit for less than replacing the gas assist.
Now gotta find a way to keep her down in reverse, but able to "break" on impact if needed.
Any ideas?
