Hi, I have a 1989 four horsepower deluxe. It has the locking and unlocking mechanism for the tilt but it doesn't seem to have a tilt lock when it's in the fully upright position. I went to the parts break down and I couldn't see any locking levers. Did this motor not come with one?

Not sure if this misses your point, but you need the tilt pin (#23) to lock the motor in an upright running position. Note also the shallow water bracket and lever (#65) that prevents the motor from locking in the upright position until released with the lever.

The Deluxe version does not have these parts.

The diagram in Crosbyman's post of the standard 4hp model not the Deluxe version. They are very different.

I thought maybe it would have the same tilt support lever as the 6hp model but it does not have that either. There does not seem to be any method of supporting the engine in the fully tilted position. I have some recollection of this being asked about in the past As far as I can remember the solution is to tighten the nut (#12) on the tilt bolt (#25) until the friction on the conical washer(#21) will just hold the motor in the fully tilted position.

So I take it the shallow water drive isn't enough tilt for trailering? There always is the old-time tilt / trailering method. Tilt it up and stick a piece of broom handle under it. ;)

You'd think if it was called a "deluxe" it would have one.

You could investigate the possibility of fitting the tilt lock components from the 6hp model
#93, #94, #95, #96 (2 off), #97(2off) Although the port side parts are probably unnecessary
