Evinrude 2hp Issues

I picked up a 2hp Evinrude from the 70's last year. It ran OK for one short outing, but after that struggled to stay running. Spark tested OK, carb cleaned and checked over, and still issues.

I took it home from the cabin in the fall, and am just getting into it now. I have a full gasket/seal kit, assuming perhaps head gasket, or crank seal issue.

Here's what I found when I pulled the powerhead: A piece of cotton rag stuck under the water inlet pipe, and jammed between powerhead and the base. It appears it is blocking the flow of exhaust. The rag is charred a bit, but still mostly intact. Looks to be a piece of a t-shirt with a Disney's Goofy playing the drum.

I'm assuming this rag is not serving a purpose in that location, but thought I'd post it up here for those that know this motor to comment on. Here's hoping that was the cause of the poor performance. I'll proceed with the replacement of all gaskets, and hopefully we'll have a nice running motor next year.

Just when you think you've seen everything, something new every day.

sparks tested ok but.... after a while sometimes the capacitor or coil can start to act funny.

Unless you have a proven good capacitor assume it needs to go ...and replaced.

inspect the coil for burn marks . best yet take everything apart (mag plate) and change the pulg wire with a new 7mm metalic strand core and plug booth. easy to do and peace of mind comes after :)

remove the fuel "side valve" and inspect/clean the small filter on top.

clean out the tank

you did change the impeller..... and check the fuel tank venting...

post your model # !!

the rag... welll who knows :-(

I didn't replace capacitor, but all ignition components look like brand new, so I'm thinking previous owner tried to get it running properly with the 'Goofy Rag' causing unknown issues. I did put new impeller on before use last summer. Will check over other items mentioned. Thanks!

Have you tested the compression of that little motor??? Without good compression nothing else matters!!

Yes, that was done last year before it went to the cabin, and it was quite good for this motor ~ 85 psi.
