Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

I tapped the cylinders in with the lower ring and zip tie in place, then put the top ring on, zipped tied it and then tapped it down further. Seems ok, maybe someone can confirm I've got these in correctly I think they are positioned correctly with the slanted side toward the exhaust.

Nice work you're doing there. Passing this on in case it applies to your outboard. Mine was a 1988:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, I had to look twice to find that hole, it's really hard to see and not very big. The hole wasn't plugged but by wiggling a wire I did loosen up some corrosion. I took a couple of pics with the white wire down from the top to show where the hold runs.

Back at it, got the snap ring pliers $12.99 in Canada was the cheapest I could find. Also got some more parts. I'm putting the crankcase back together. Used the anaerobic permatex 518 to seal that.

Really did some serious searching on gasket sealer and if it should be used on the gaskets and wether to use anti-seize on the bolts. After much review I decided to not use anti-seize and to keep the gaskets dry. This topic is like discussing religion and politics on this forum it appears...

hope I did this correct: someone can learn from my mistake if not if someone wants to comment that knows

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

Got the 6 main bolts in really wondering what size the 4 inner bolts should be (arrow on picture). I had the 8mm headed bolts in there to start and they seemed too small for the job they would be doing so I went with the 10mm same length and thread (really wish I had done some reading on here before the tear down 2 years ago and got my bolts more organized !) Learning the hard way. Using the 8mm on the intake, I'm wondering if that's correct. The diagrams I have don't mention the bolt sizes ?

Maybe this will help. Here are a couple of photos during my disassembly:

I removed the prop as per instructions to do the water pump, the cotter pin was twisted so I had to cut if off. Other than that the lower unit bolts came out easily and it pulled down easily. I drained the oil first of course.

I found my other needle bearings while doing this, as suspected they were down the hole.

This is what the inside of the housing looks like with the power head off, in case you were wondering.

Took water pump bolts off and lifted housing, rubber pieces fell out... it was in bad shape.

Created another post to ask specifically about this problem, not sure where to go now... the shaft the old impellor is on doesn't look like it has a key it's kinda corroded though. Not sure if I should lift the shaft out to get this off or not.

soak it with penetrating oil, it should come off. the key should be there, and its probably just plastic/nylon.

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

Thanks for the reply NWCove, small world I'm just across the straight in PEI. This piece of the impeller was stuck good and no signs of moving. I did have it soaking for the most of the day. I searched some more on the forum and found the dremel method of splitting this, I didn't have any sense that penetrating fluid was going to budge it but probably didn give it long enough. I went with rotal tool method and that gave me an excuse to buy a rotary tool, don't know why I didn't have one sooner this made light work of old impeller. The old style pump was much heavier metal and thicker than the new, I cut it in two places with the rotary tool being careful not to nick the shaft. When I got close to the shaft with two cuts I gave it a light tap with a flat screw driver and a hammer and broke the old pump away.

You can also see the old style metal pin.

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

I cleaned everything up and put on the new water pump kit, very easy after I got the old impeller off, wouldn't pay to have someone do this now that I've done it once. (hope it works ok getting a little cocky)

IMG-20120303-00288.jpg

Housing on top and bolted down, had to oil the housing a bit and twist the shaft as per the manual to get it down over the new impeller

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

I installed the powerhead this morning and then I worked on getting the lower end installed, figured if I got in a mess I wouldn't want all the rest of the powerhead stuff on before hand.

IMG-20120304-00290.jpg

I chose to put the lower end in with it in the tilt position, that way I could more easily see the water tube and line everything up. I took a bit of wiggling and a light tap with a rubber hammer and a bit of rotation on the shaft and then she went up. You can't put the bolts in until you get it in place.

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

I found getting the mag back on pretty challenging, had two or three attempts at it before I figure it out (hopefully!) Main problem seemed to be getting things in place so they didn't jamb up when I twisted the throttle and how the three layers fit together. Would have been nice to have had pictures when I took it apart.

Got the rest of the stuff on except for the starter mechanism. I need new rope, oil for the lower end. a cotter pin and a couple of plugs wouldn't hurt.

Found a way to jamb the flywheel with a big screw driver behind the thermostat housing to get the torque on the flywheel that took a bit of ciphering.

I used every bolt, nut and part that I had in that box from two years ago. I'm getting to close to giving this thing a try and hoping I did things correctly. If she doesn't go doesn anyone need a near working engine for parts ????;)

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

Put on pull cord assembly tonight (turn the starter counter clockwise when you are loading tension on the spring to get your 16.5 turns) the other way only gives you about 8 and is backwards of course.

I put in gear oil and new spark plugs, both of them are showing fire tonight so that's good. I have to get some fresh gas and oil tomorrow and I'm going to give it a try.
