Hello
I am new to this forum as well as outboard mechanics. My father gave me an old outboard 5hp Evinrude. It hasn't run in over 25 years but I know it ran very well back then and has very few total hours on it. I bought a tune up kit and a service manual for it but I am ignorant about a lot of things that I assume are basic and are not covered in the manual. My first question is how do I pull off the flywheel?
The service manual says I need a special flywheel puller #378103. But I cannot even get the attaching nut loose. I cannot hold the flywheel while loosening the nut. Anybody have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Evinrude 1965 model 55025 5HP help

To pull the flywheel remove the spark plugs. take a 2 foot section of 3/8 cotton rope and turn the engine over so the piston is s bottom of stroke. now stuff as much of the 3/8 rope as you can in the cylinder now when you turn the flywheel nut the piston will jam against the rope in the cylinder and you can remove the nut, the puller you need to pull the flywheel is a standard steering wheel 3 leg fork puller they are cheap and available at any auto parts or big box stores, good luck cheers.
