You could do a file search for *.wav and try to figure out which application is making the sound.

Dry fan bearings make some funny noises as do HDD bearings, the latter will causing spurious faults.:^

The evil one is still there. At random times I get:
* creaking door
* loud crash
* meow
* "heh, heh, heh"

sounds like AOL buddy sounds.............

Aspeck has been sleeping in class. Mr Cornwell preferes Chivas Regal, which is a blended scots whisky. As to the frequency and amounts I can make no comment, however......:^

When he isn't drinking Becks or Heini, Dr. Cornwell usually drinks Chivas Regal.

When he feels rich he drinks 12 year old Macallan's Single Malt.

For special (very special) occasions he has a dram of Chivas Royal Salute or Macallan's 25 year old single malt.

Most of the time he drinks coffee.

Ahhh, Yes. Turning off the speakers does get rid of him. Turning off AOL does, too. (AHA!!)

Now I am going to go to my buddy list and delete everybody there to see if that is where it is coming from. . . when a listed buddy does something like log on, log off, send an IM to someone else, etc.

Do you need AOL to connect to the internet? My dad went to dsl, where he does not need aol for the internet, but insists on using it. If you have a highspeed connection, you do not need AOL. Just wondering if you could get rid of AOL and see if the sounds go away.

I deleted all addys in my aol buddy list at about 10:AM today. There were a TON of them.

The noises/voices have not been heard since.

Maybe I am ghost-free at last.

No, I don't NEED aol. I am on wireless broadband. But I do WANT aol.

the mail you open will populate to your buddy list also, if they are an AOL member you will here their buddy sound when they sign on or off......
I haven't looked in set up if you can turn that option off,
I will look, and let ya know if it can be disabled

at the bottom of your buddy list window click setup
the buddy list screen will pop up, click IM settings
click on the expressions tab
click the buddy arrival and departure drop down arrow
click do not play any sound
click save............

you should not hear buddy sounds after that,

Some folks are just hooked on AOL. I know several that really hate it's quirks, but will never change...So...

Start, Control panel, Sounds and Audio Devices. Then Sounds. Under "Sound Scheme" click the drop down arrow and select "No Sounds" and apply.. Say goodbye to all the creepy sounds. Or under "Program Events" in the Sound window, use the dropdown list and delete only the sounds you don't want....

AOL has toll free tech support, and online help, sometimes they can help, but rarely
I do the free be stuff first, whenever I have problems.
I had a little misfortune and haven't been following up much, sorry for your inconvenience
I don't know much about PC's, but I can help with AOL whenever you need it............
