engine won't shut off

Was tuning my engine today on muffs and engine started to rev into real high rpm's so I go to shut the engine off and it won't turn off. Key completely out of the ignition and it's still running. So I unplug the fuel line and pull the spark plug wires and it's still screaming. Finally choked it to kill it but don't understand what happened in the first place. Going to rebuild the carbs as I'm sure they got stuck open but how did the engine continue to fire without a source of ignition. Afraid of a bigger problem than just the carbs. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No, was idling fine. Was just going to turn it off when it started steadily increasing in rpm. Was just like taking in to wot on the water.

I have heard of engine run away, sounds like this is what happened. it usually happens when you over rev the engine while on the muffs. hopefully you have not smoked your engine, you should check compression.

Checked it after engine cooled down, 108 on top, 106 on bottom. First thought was that I probably fried it because it smoked for a little afterwards. Compression is same as last time I checked it after decarb and flywheel turns so engine is not seized. Afraid to try and start it again until I have a clue as to what went wrong.

Re: engine won't shut off

I was checking that engine was tuned on the muffs before I was planning on going out tonight. Nothing more than making sure it would crank and letting it idle for a few minutes. Besides turning the key to start the engine, no controls were ever touched and engine was never revved. The engine started reving on it's own.
