We have 9.9 chrysler here...model#92h2j it won't idle but runs in higher throttle positions. When we hold the throttle at higher rpms it seems to cavitate a little. We have checked the carb and cleaned it. Check the plug gaps and set at .30. Our mixture ratio is 50:1. We want to check the points and check the the gap which i heard is .20 but we can't seem to get the flywheel loose does it thread on. Put a gear puller on it but it won't budge. I would appriciate any help.

If you took the flywheel nut off and have a puller, it sounds like you are on your way. Tighten down the puller and rap the center post/bolt once or twice with a hammer (firm but careful).

You can get hurt taking off a flywheel, so wear gloves and be careful. When it pops it makes a sound that may make you believe it busted in half, if you don't know what to expect. Don't get hit by the puller when the tension is released.

I'm not sure what you mean by cavitation -- might be exhaust coming out down by the prop if you are running in a test barrel. Make sure you have enough water in the barrel (water level well up on the leg). It's also not a good idea to run at high rpms in a barrel, at least for sustained periods. The motor could overheat.

The proper oil mix might be a little richer than 50:1 (i.e., 48:1) -- might err on the side of a little extra oil.

I'll be curious about your findings, by the way, as I have a similar problem with a 9.9 Chrysler (95HA). I rebuilt the fuel pump (and cleaned the carb), but still have the problem -- might go through the fuel pump if you haven't done so. In my case, I suspect I've got a weak coil. I just got it back together, so I think I'll let it be for a while -- but would like to hear what you find with yours.

Well after my first post something told me to check the fuel pump and sure enough it had a cracked diaphram. Went down and got the part and i'm proud to say she's purring like a kitten now.

Good to hear your motor is purring. If you ever need points and condensers, try boatingsolutions.com. I got the kit for my 55 for $30(2 points,2 condensers). Don't get their carb rebuild kit. It's defective. NAPA has the right carb kit. If you ever need to pull flywheel, make sure your puller is a bolt on type. Never use a puller around the teeth. It WILL ruin your flywheel.

This doesn't make sense to me.

Why would the fuel pump diaphram affect the idle? It would seem to me that once the float bowl is full (by squeezing the bulb) the motor should run just fine until the float bowl is empty.

How does the fuel pump affect idle?
