I took the grandkids out for some tubbing, and after about 10 minutes I heard a thump noise and the engine stopped, after paddling back I took the boat out thinking the out drive seized I could put the out drive in forward and reverse and the prop could be turned by hand but when I try to start the engine it won’t crank at all and the out drive lifts up.
I’m going to take the out drive off tomorrow and see if will turn over, if it does I guess the problem is with the Volvo out drive. Anyone else thoughts?

Anyone else have had this happen or hear of it before, the boat is a Fourwinns Horizon 180 with a 4.3 and a Volvo Penta out drive.
I had the out drive totally rebuilt about 4 years ago and I checked the gear oil and it was full

Welcome
Just to clarify, you put the drive in forward or reverse and you can turn the prop by hand, right?

I forget the hours but I’ve learned that they do have a lifespan. Worked at a marina and over the years I’ve seen more than a few that went south for unknown reasons. I know one in particular that had quicksilver oil in it and was told that was the reason. But I dug deep someplace and many do run the quicksilver oil rather than the Volvo specific oil and have better luck.

The engine not cranking has nothing to do with the condition of the drive. Do not take it off just yet, start with the engine diagnosis first.

pull the plugs and see if the motor turns over.

if water squirts out a cylinder or two, there are other things to check
