Engine stuck - not sure what to check!

On my way to Catalina - I was out about 9 miles from shore, engine was running great - temp good, oil pressue good, 14 volts -- full tank of gas.. Then there was a noise coming from lower engine - like a card in the spokes type sound, slowed down/sped up with the throttle
I stopped -- checked the engine - looked at the prop - nothing visably stuck.

Started up and ran for another 20min - then the steering got weird and the engine stopped...

When I stried to start, just kind of a low clunk and the outdrive seemd to twitch but that was that - got towed back

Any ideas before I turn the mechanic loose?

I have a 82' Sea Ray with MerCruise Ford 188

Sounds like the upper has self destructed. Take off the bearing cover on top of the outdrive and see if you see broken parts in there. Mine did the same thing a few years ago. If it is the SEI drives are a great economical replacement.

Could be the outdrive, pull it off and see if it runs.
