i am almost ready to fire up a boat in which i have not seen run. the firing order on the old air filter cover says reverse firing order. it is a 454 motor. i need to buy a starter. does it have to be reverse spinning? can you tell from the prop if indeed it is reverse order? it has linkage in the outdrive that you can change the position of, to chane rotation. please help this is a little confusing.here is the prop.http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w192/kfcz400/?action=view&current=091.jpg

Model and serial #'s should tell a story.

Also take a look at the plug wires on the distributor, normal rotation turns clockwise 18436572, if the wires are different from that then map them out in counterclockwise rotation and see if they match the firing order on the spark arrester cover.

Most probably you do have a reverse rotation unit, but confirm before ordering that starter.

Need a different angle on the prop but it appears to be right hand.
Did you have the timing cover off?
chain drive is standard rotation and gear drive is reverse rotation.
Where does the starter mount?
to the engine , standard rot motor, standard rot starter
to the bell housing, standard rot engine, reverse rot starter

Remove all the spark plugs.Hold your finger over #1 spark plug hole(front cyl.port side).Crank over the engine by hand until you feel compression build up.Stop cranking. Now see which is the next cyl. to make compression. It will only be 1/4 turn more.If it is #8(last cyl.at the rear starboard side)then it is left hand or standard rotation. If it is #2 (front cyl.Starboard side)then it is a right hand rotation. When checking for left hand or standard rotation you need to turn over engine counter clock wise as viewed from the rear of the boat looking forward to #1 cyl. When checking for right hand rotation you have to turn over the engine clock wise as viewed from the rear looking forward to #1.Hope I didn't make this sound to confusing.

Re: engine rotation round 2

timing chain indicates a standard rotation motor that takes a standard rotation starter
pick, only the crankshaft spins opposite not the camshaft in GM motors

So, I'm curious. If I was to place a car engine in a boat that is LH rotation, then the only thing that would have to be done is change the timing chain to gears?

I'm not planning on doing this, but I am interested in whats different to make an engine LH rotation. I was assuming that you'd have to change the crank and cam at the least.

LH rotation is determined when viewing the FLYWHEEL, and a car engine is LH rotation.

LOL....Now I am confused. The engine is locked so I can't turn the crank. So I must go by what I see to try to determine rotation so that I can order the correct parts. Its a 79 mercruiser 228, 305 GM.

The valve cover has a label that says Engine Rotation: CCW
When I pulled the timing chain cover tonight I discovered a timing chain.
I removed the center bolt from the damper by turning it counter-clockwise.
My firing order listed on the intake and the label on the valve cover reads 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2

I was assuming that CCW rotation was as viewed from the flywheel like LH and RH rotation. Am I incorrect?

So do I have a LH or RH rotation engine?

454 is a big block chevy, 305 is a small block chevy.
?????????????????????????????????????????????
If 305 as stated, you need a standard rotation starter,

If you have a timing chain, it's a LH rotation engine. I don't care what your decals say or what it says on the manifold, or anything else.
It's a 30 year old motor, perhaps a previous owner rebuilt the thing and made it a LH rotation engine, or replaced a rusty valve cover with one with a different decal........ Who knows.

Same subject, but not your engine or question.
Would you break into someone elses verbal conversation when they were talking about a 454 and turn it into your problem with a 305?
